The matchup features a reunion of Syracuse defensive coordinator John Odierna with his old program. Odierna was the head coach of Manhattan last season and served as an assistant coach there for seven seasons prior to being elevated to the top job.

The Jaspers compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and the two teams have never previously met. Last season, the Jaspers went 10-5 overall at 7-2 in the conference, and fell 11-8 to Siena in the MAAC Championship.

PREGAME

3:51 p.m. We’ve got some New York Yankees royalty in the house here today. Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera is at the Dome for today’s game. His son, Jaziel, is a junior face-off specialist for the Jaspers.

3:40 p.m. Syracuse midfielder Jackson Birtwistle will return to the lineup today for the Orange and will run on the second midfield line. Birtwistle, who had 27 goals last season, had missed SU’s first two games with a lower-body injury.

Syracuse will be without defenseman Landon Clary, who suffered a lower-body injury against Colgate on Monday.

3:05 p.m. Hello from the JMA Dome for an afternoon tilt of lacrosse! We set a record-high temperature for the day here in Syracuse. Was kind of hoping at the last minute they’d move this one outside.

The John Odierna reunion is the main storyline here today. Usually scouting a team for the first game of the season is difficult, but Odierna provides Gary Gait with some direct knowledge of the Jaspers as their former head coach.

Manhattan features MAAC Co-Preseason Player of the Year Kyle Gucwa. Gucwa, a captain for Manhattan, makes his return as a graduate student with a total of 50 points under his belt from last season, having an even 25 goals and 25 assists.

The Jaspers have two local players on the roster. Graduate student midfielder is a Fayetteville-Manlius alum. Shanley missed last season with an injury. He recorded 14 points in 2002. Defenseman Patrick Otts joins the roster as a freshman from Baldwinsville.
