Nicolás Leoz is of Navarran descent. On December 3, 2000 the Diario de Navarra newspaper, reported that, “Nicolás Leoz Almirón, president of the South American Football Federation, received the keys to Liédena, the Navarran town where his father Gregorio Leoz was born. Leoz Sr. immigrated to Argentina when he was 19 years old. The former president arrived in Navarra on his way back from Japan, where he presented Boca Juniors with the Intercontinental Cup, after the Argentinean side beat Real Madrid in the final in Tokyo. The townsfolk of Liédena stood by Leoz who struggled to hold back his tears with emotion”. Leoz never hid from his roots and was proud of his origin. He told AS once at a reception in Luque (Asunción). “I go to Spain when I can. I do so as I feel half-Spanish, I also take advantage of the trip to meet my good friend Ángel Villar, who is like a son to me”. After that statement, he took his mobile phone and called Villar with the rest of us watching.

Despite his fondness for Spain, Leoz made his life in his country of birth, Paraguay. He managed to amass a huge fortune. He was even brash enough to buy the Banco do Brasil building, his financial institution for the CONMEBOL account as well as his personal bank. Convidante X reveled how, “in October 1998, from what I recall, Doctor Leoz bought the Banco do Brasil building, one of the finest in Asunción. He paid 953.000 US$. It was no financial drain for him as he had millions of dollars”.
