Real Madrid vs Melilla: match report
Real Madrid have booked their place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey, after they comfortably beat minnows Melilla 6-1 (10-1 on aggregate) in the second leg of the round of 32 tie at the Bernabéu on Thursday evening.
After the 4-0 win five weeks ago in the away leg in North Africa, Santiago Solari named an unfamiliar looking side, handing starts to a number of young reserve players. But it was the two familiar faces of Asensio and Isco that most stood out in the game. The pair played a part in five of Madrid’s six goals, scoring four of them.
After an open 30 minutes, in which Madrid were on top but Melilla also made a few chances, Asensio scored two goals in quick succession in the 33rd and 35th minute. And just four minutes later in the 39th minute, Asensio was involved again, when he picked out Bernabéu debutant Javi Sanchez with a beautiful chip, which the youngster coolly finished with an outstretched volley from inside the box. Three goals in the space of six minutes for Madrid and they were plain sailing when the referee blew the half-time whistle.
After the break Madrid continued from where they left off, with Isco adding his name to the scoresheet with just three minutes of the second half played. The captain received a simple pass from Ceballos about 25 yards out on the left, before expertly curling the ball into the top left corner, leaving the Melilla goalkeeper Moreno with no chance.
Vinicius, who was heavily involved throughout but failed to capitalize on a number of chances, knocked in a scrappy fifth goal on the 75-minute mark, before Isco had his second in the 83rd. Fran Garcia, another youngster who put in a lively performance when he came on for the second half, made a beautifully-angled run down the left before squaring the ball to Isco in the box. The Spaniard’s first touch was sublime and set him up perfectly on his right foot to slot it passed Moreno.
Second Division B side Melilla were completely and expectedly outclassed at the Bernabéu, but the minnows had their fair share of chances, particularly in the opening 25 minutes, and were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 81st minute, thanks to a well converted penalty by Qasim.
But it is the Primera Division giants who go through, joining rivals Atlético Madrid and Barcelona in the last 16 of the cup competition, the draw for which will be made on December 13.
Real Madrid vs Melilla: as it happened
92' Beep, beep, beeeep! And that's it. An easy win for Madrid as expected. The relatively small crowd that made the effort to come to the Bernabéu today got their money's worth with six decent goals. Madrid through the last 16 with ease. Melilla head toward their supporters section to applaud them. To be fair, they made a fair few chances, but Madrid understandably too strong in the end. They make the long trip back to North Africa with at least a goal on the scoreboard, which was one more than they managed at home five weeks ago.
90' Two minutes added on here.
83' GOAL ISCO!!! Fran Garcia makes a terrific run down the left and squares it to Isco in the box. His first touch is sublime and sets him up perfectly on his right foot to slot it passed Moreno.
81' GOAL MELILLA!!! Qasmi buries the penalty into the left corner, sending Navas the wrong way.
78' Vinicius has got his goal, and now he's coming off. On comes Fidalgo to make his debut.
75' GOAL! I spoke to soon! Vinicius finally gets his name on the scoreboard, thanks to a bit of luck. His first attempt was poor and straight at Moreno. But the keeper couldn't hold it and Vinicius was first on the rebound to make sure it found the back of the net on the second attempt.
74' The fact that Melilla have kept Madrid from scoring another goal for 25 minutes is an achievement in itself.
72' Vinicius plays a short corner to... himself, interesting tecnhique.
66' Melilla's Garcia appeals for penatly after being taken down in the box, but the ref waves play on.
63' Fran Garcia releases Vinicius in the box on the left. His shot is straight at the keeper, but, to be fair, it was quite a tight angle when he eventually got the shot off with his left foot.
62' Valverde tries one from a long way out, as he did in the first half, but again it's wide. His team mates we'll be hoping he'll pass it the next time.
56' Vinicius is one on one with the keeper after a Melilla defender is dispossessed just outside the box. But he fluffs his shot. The teenager will be disappointed he hasn't scored, he has had more than enough chances to get on the scoreboard.
48' GOLAZO!!! Isco on the left curls a beauty into the the top left corner from 25 yards out, leaving Moreno no chance. Madrid continuing from where they left off. Ceballos, who just came on, with the assist.
46' Two changes for Madrid: Llorento off for Ceballos. Fran Garcia comes on for Carvajal.
The players are making their way out for the second half.
46' And the ref calls an end to the first half. Melilla started well and had a couple of chances. But as these things often go, Madrid began to dominate possesion after about 25 minutes and scored three goals in quick succession. Surely there will be more to come in the second half.
46' Chance for Vinicius. He shoots from inside the box, it's a decent strike but just wide of the left post.
44' A minute until half time. Melilla will be looking forward to the respite after that quick succession of Madrid goals.
39' GOAL MADRID!!! Asensio, about 25 yards out, chips one over the Melilla defence to find Javi Sanchez, who finishes it with a first time shot on the volley. That's two goals and an assist from Asensio. Madrid running riot now.
35' GOAL MADRID!!! Asensio again! Vinicius cuts in from left and squares it to an unmarked Asensio 12 yards out. It's an easy finish for the midfielder who had just the keeper to beat. Two goals for Asensio in less than two minutes.
33' GOAL MADRID!!!! It was coming.... Asensio recieves the ball on the right about 45 yards out and dribbles all the way into the box before planting one into the left hand corner.
28' Vinicius is released down the right and puts a low first-time ball into Mariano in the box, but Mahanan puts in an incredible tackle on Madrid attacker to stop what was a certain goal.
24' Madrid passing it around here, trying to build something. But an organised Melilla are doing well to keep them at bay.
20' Carvajal cuts in from the left, and taps it forward to Vinicius in the box, he hits it well but it's saved by Moreno.
18' Madrid tap it around until Valverde tries one from 35 yards out, but it's wide. Ambitious!
16' Chance Melilla! Mizzian launches a rocket rom just outside the box, and it sails just over the bar.
15' It's been an open game so far, and Melilla, to be fair, have been good. They have had a fair few chances as well.
13' Madrid get a break off a Melilla corner and move it quickly towards Asensio, who looked unsure whether to shoot or pass. In the end he decided to square it to the oncoming Isco, but his close range shot was straight at the keeper. That should have been 1-0 to Madrid.
12' Isco feed the a short ball to Vinicius who is taken down in the box. Appeals for a penalty but the ref says play on.
10' Mariano involved again in a Madrid attack. He turns his man beautifully with his first touch and bursts down the right. He swings one into the box towards Vinicius, but a Melilla defender get's a foot out to stop the cross. Madrid looking dangerous.
8' Mariano is released in the middle, he beats one defender but pushes the ball to far ahead of him and Melilla keeper Moreno is first to it.
6' Melilla whip a great ball into the box, and Carvajal has injured himself while dealing with it. He was done for half a minute but he seems to be ok.
4' Vinicius takes his first touches on the left, he gets a shot away from distance but it's deflected wide for a corner.
2' Chance for Melilla after Keylor Navas makes a big error from a pass back, handing possesiion to Melilla. But the shot is wide.
And the game is away! Melilla kick off in front of a sparse crowd it has to be said.
Isco has been named as captain and he's leading the team out of the tunnel now, as the stadium begins to fill up.
Melilla traveled eleven hours to face Real Madrid today. They left the North African coast by boat on Wednesday at 00:30 and arrived at their hotel at 11:30, before training at Madrid's Valdebebas training ground at 6pm the same day. No chartered flights for Second Division B side.
Of coure this is the last game to be played at the Bernabéu before the hotly anticipated (or not, depending where you stand) Copa Libertadores final on Sunday. It was reported earlier that Spanish police had stopped Maxi Mazzaro, one of the leaders of Boca Junior ultras, at Madrid’s Barajas airport and deported him back to Argentina. You can read about that here.
There is not much to play for in this game: but it will be interesting to watch how the MAV (Mariano, Asensio, Vinicius) front trio combine today. With Madrid's regular attacking players strugggling to find goals, perhaps they'll give Solari something to thnk about.
