Colombia midfielder assumed responsibility for Los Cafeteros limp performance against a well-drilled Peru side.

The Colombia national team wasn't able to break down an obstinate Peru defence; Los Cafeteros lacked creativity and accuracy in front of goal, on the rare occasion they were afforded a sight of it. James Rodríguez spoke to reporters after the match and shouldered the blame for the side's lack of cutting edge, explaining that Colombia found it difficult to overcome the lack of space given up by Peru.

Analysis: "They were very good at the back, they shut up shop. They knew the draw would be good enough for them to go through. When you play badly you can be made to pay for it. Today we didn't play well and we're unhappy about it."

Colombia's trajectory: "It's hard work, we are a new group. If we want to win anything we have to be ready to work very hard."

Personal performance: "I'm in good shape physically, I played a lot of matches with Real Madrid, but these are not excuses. Today we tried to give it everything but sometimes these things happen."

Self-criticism: "We played badly, and when you do that you have be self-critical. When nothing comes off you have to take responsibility.

Peru: "We were stretched, with lots of spaces and it was also a game with a lot of fouls. It's a little boring, to be honest."

Argentina: "It's a touch match, but at this stage [of the tournament] you have to play whoever you're drawn against."
