Former Bernabéu chief believes the defender s contract impasse is a public rebuke from Florentino Pérez for his support of Carlo Ancelotti.

Former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón has weighed into the Sergio Ramos situation with declarations made to the British press in which he stated that the defender is not happy at the club because Florentino Pérez has not yet dealt with his contract renewal. “It’s clear that Ramos isn’t happy at because the president hasn’t offered him a contract extension,” Calderón told talkSPORT.

The former Bernabéu chief stated his belief that Pérez’s motive for not tying up a new deal with the Spain international was his public support for Carlo Ancelotti: “To me it seems as though it is a public dressing down over his support for Ancelotti and for saying that he did not agree he should have been sacked. The same thing as Iker Casillas.”

Calderón added that Manchester United would be hugely fortunate if they manage to bring Ramos to Old Trafford. “Let’s see what happens in the next few weeks. He is an icon for Real Madrid fans, on and off the pitch. I don’t know if he is the best central defender in the world but he is one of the best. He can play in the middle of defence, on the right or in midfield.”
