The Ottawa Senators sent Mike Hoffman packing Tuesday morning.

Before heading to Dallas for the draft, the Senators traded Hoffman to the San Jose Sharks with prospect Cody Donaghy and a 2020 fifth-round pick in exchange for Mikkel Boedkker, defenceman Julius Bergman and a sixth-round pick in 2020.

The Senators had to move Hoffman after learning captain Erik Karlsson’s wife Melinda Karlsson had filed for a protection order against winger’s fiancee Monika Caryk.

“Today’s trade showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice. We are confident it is a step in the right direction for the long-term success of this organization,” said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement.

“Mikkel Boedker is a competitive, versatile, two-way forward who can play both wings,” added Dorion. “He has a track record of playing his best hockey in the most important games, including the playoffs and internationally. His skill set – in particular his speed – along with his veteran leadership fits with our vision for the team.”

Boedkker is the centrepiece of the deal for the Senators. He has 109 goals, 179 assists and 288 points in 618 games.
