The appeal of the Saudi Pro League has been too much for some stars to resist, but a number of targets have been able to say no.

Karim Benzema is perhaps the biggest name to join the competition this summer, moving from Real Madrid to Al Ittihad, but a number of Premier League stars have also taken the big money on offer. N'Golo Kante and Ruben Neves have both completed moves, with Jordan Henderson and Riyad Mahrez expected to follow suit.

Some have been able to resist big-money offers, though. Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets have chosen MLS over Saudi Arabia, while a handful of Premier League names have also decided the gulf state is not for them, with Mirror Football shedding more light on those rejections.

Son Heung-min

Spurs forward Son has become a key man for the North London side since joining from Bayer Leverkusen. With the team missing out on European qualification, he might have been tempted to jump ship, but he explained his reasons for staying put despite interest from Al Ittihad.

"Most people are going there, which is really, really interesting," the South Korea international said. "Obviously money is also important, but I dream of playing in the Premier League and there's still a lot of things to do.

"Last season, I suffered physically. This is not the Sonny I know. So I want to prove this season that I am the Sonny we all know. I want to prove that to myself and I want to give back to the club where I belong."

Bruno Fernandes

Man Utd star Fernandes is reported to have turned down at least two approaches from the Saudi Pro League. The Portugal international had been tipped earlier in the summer to succeed Harry Maguire as club captain at Old Trafford, and his decision to stay has been rewarded with the permanent armband.

"He gave me congratulations and he said he is really happy for me," Fernandes said of his conversation with Maguire. "I understand his position is not the best at the moment. It has to be difficult for him but he came and said congratulations to me and I am happy about that because we have always had a good relationship.

"Everyone already knew about the situation with H [Maguire] but no one knew who would be the next captain. So [Ten Hag broke the news] in a team meeting with everyone together because it’s something we have to do more often, to keep the things inside and give the compliments inside to ourselves."

Romelu Lukaku

Belgium striker Lukaku is back in the Premier League with Chelsea, even if the Blues might not have a place for him in their squad. With Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson arriving this summer, the £97.5m man appears surplus to requirements.

Nevertheless, he reportedly turned down a mega-money offer from Saudi side Al Hilal. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Goal), the £45m-per-year deal was of no interest to the 30-year-old.

Lukaku spent last year on loan at Inter Milan, but the Nerazzurri have reportedly turned their attentions away from a permanent move after the striker held secret talks with Juventus. Juve themselves, meanwhile, would need to raise funds through a sale if they are to bring the former Man Utd man to Turin.

Moussa Diaby

French winger Diaby was another target for the Saudi Pro League, and a deal for the 24-year-old would have felt like a real coup. Instead, though, it was Aston Villa who won the race to sign the former PSG youngster from Bayer Leverkusen.

“I think if you have any knowledge of football, if you love football, you know who he is,” Diaby's new team-mate John McGinn said of the move. “You’re excited by him coming in, he’s certainly going to improve us.

“And the thing for us is there’s a lot of players here who didn’t have European experience," added the Scot, with Europa Conference League football on the horizon. "What Pau [Torres], Youri [Tielemans] and Moussa add is European experience, which can only help us as a team.”

Marco Silva

It's not just players who have been targeted by the big spenders in Saudi Arabia. Steven Gerrard has taken over as manager of Al Ettifaq, while Fulham boss Marco Silva also received an approach, only to opt to stay in West London.

“My commitment to this club has been 100 per cent since the first day I signed and it will continue this way,” the Portuguese boss said. "Offers are part of the business. I’ve had two great years at Fulham.

“It’s up to us to respect the club where we are working, which is what I’ve always done in my career.‌ I made a decision, spoke to the club and, like before, I am fully committed to the club.”
