(05-08-1980): BAYERN 9 - REAL MADRID 1
This is the game that gave rise to the famous phrase by former Madrid coach, Vujadin Boškov who claimed that “I’d rather lose one game by nine goals than lose nine games by one goal”. 35 years ago today, Madrid played a pre-season friendly at Bayern’s then home, The Olympic Stadium. Madrid had just been in pre-season training for eight days and the Bundesliga was due to start some ten days later. Despite winning the 1979/80 La Liga and Copa del Rey double, Madrid received one of the biggest humiliations in the clubs history. After just 45 minutes, the German side was already 7-0 ahead with a hat-trick from Uli Hoeness, and a double from Rummenigge amongst the local side’s goal scorers.
The biased refereeing or the lack of key players such as Del Bosque or Juanito cannot be cited as excuses and fortunately, the German side eased off in the second half. English player, Laurie Cunningham scored a consolation penalty with nine minutes remaining. “I’ve never conceded so many goals”, claimed García Ramón. “The German team buzzed around like planes”, stated García Navajas. “Everything worked out for Bayern”, lamented Pérez García. Despite that humiliation start to the 1980-81 campaign, the ‘Los García’ Real Madrid did manage to reach the European Cup final that season where they lost to English side, Liverpool.
