Manchester City have signed England Under-21 international Jack Harrison from sister club New York City FC, scuppering Stoke’s pursuit of the midfielder.  Harrison arrived back in England on Tuesday and will be loaned immediately to Championship side Middlesbrough, who are keen to strengthen the squad ahead of a play-off push under new boss Tony Pulis.

The Stoke-born midfielder was released by Manchester United at the age of 14, but told The Independent in an interview earlier this month that he still dreams of playing in the English top flight.

“Everyone dreams of playing in the top leagues in Europe and the Premier League is obviously up there. Growing up in England, it’s always been a dream of mine to play in the Prem.

“But as of right now, I’m still a New York City player.

“I just leave it all to my agent. I don’t like to think too much about that stuff or get caught up in it.”

After his move was confirmed, Harrison said:

“I can’t wait to get started over here.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time with New York City and I’d like to thank Patrick Vieira and his coaching staff for helping me to develop as a player.

“I feel I’ve really improved working under him and playing regularly in the MLS, but now I’m looking forward to testing myself in England.

“Middlesbrough are a good club, with Premier League experience and they’re in the mix for a return via the playoffs this season.

“Hopefully I can help them achieve that.”

The deal bears some similarities to the transfer of Aaron Mooy, who City bought from another sister club, Melbourne City, in 2016. They immediately sent the Australian international on loan to Huddersfield, where he was named player of the season as they were promoted to the Premier League. Huddersfield bought Mooy for £8m last summer without him ever playing a game for Manchester City.
