The Spanish representation in the field at Eastbourne a WTA Premier event, was cut in half on Tuesday when Garbiñe Muguruza reached the second round but Carla Suárez was knocked out on her debut at the tournament.
Muguruza, the 14th seed, defeated Slovenia's Polona Hercog in three sets (5-7, 6-3, 6-0) and will go on to face Britain's Johanna Konta for a place in round three after the local favourite pulled off a shock win over world number eight Ekaterina Makarova.
Muguruza was initially put on the back foot by Hercog, conceding a break at 5-6 that cost her the first set but she then recovered and put on a show of hard hitting to win comfortably, with a bagel in the final set. Muguruza wrapped up the match in one hour and 43 minutes.
Suárez, seeded fifth, lost in straight sets to Sloane Stephens in the final rehearsal before the Wimbledon Championships. Although she reached the quarters in Birmingham last week, Suárez fell to a 0-4 scoreline in the first set as she struggled to get into the match. In the second set she conceded a break when well placed at 5-5 and bowed out of the tournament against the world number 43.
Suárez and Muguruza last week won the doubles event at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.
