Tomkins is booked for a cynical foul on Tella.

Southampton defended superbly from a dangerous-looking Palace move and immediately launched the counter. Tella rounds Tomkins but he is hauled down by the defender and Southampton will have a free-kick.

Stunning ball in from Ward-Prowse - he's a set piece demon - and Long puts a good header in that Butland needs to be in tune to.

Southampton pushing harder now, Ward concedes the corner, but Palace clear their lines.

Hughes bends a free-kick into the box off his left foot but it's headed away well by Southampton. Still, the momentum is certainly with the hosts...

Palace continue to push but Livramento slides in with a perfectly timed challenge to snatch the ball from the feet of the charging Edouard.

This half has been a wonderfully pacey opening to the half.

Zaha attempts a step-over in the Southampton box as Palace look threatening but he forgets to take the ball with him.

The visitors smash the ball upfield, hoping to catch Palace on the counter, but Tomkins does well to hold off the challenge of Broja.

Good ball down the line to Zaha who loses Lyanco, but Zaha's ball in is a little bit rushed and Caballero clears.

Three cracking goals and, on balance, a deserved lead for Southampton. Palace overwhelmed them in the early exchanges, but they grew into the match and ended the half in the ascendancy.

Broja bets Tomkins for pace down the left and slips a ball into the box which the hosts - just - deal with.

End to end stuff here as Palace skip down the other end with venom, but they cannot manufacture an opportunity.

A Tomkins gaff sees Tella engineer some space deep in the Palace half. Tomkins atones for his error but Tella still manages to earn a corner.

They've turned the game on its head! Broja picks up the ball on the edge of the area and he has a bit of time to unleash a ferocious shot into the bottom-corner of Butland's net.

Wow. What a free-kick from Ward-Prowse! Southampton are level!

There's spin and bend and dip, and Ward-Prose clips it up and over the wall and into the top-left corner of Butland's net. Textbook.

Hughes catches Broja very marginally on the knee in a dangerous position, and Southampton win the free-kick.

Redmond makes an individual effort to try and enter the box, but Palace's defence holds firm.

Salisu's 'long' throw drops a bit short, allowing Palace an easy out, but Southampton win a free-kick in a crossable area.

Guehi is booked for Palace and Walker-Peters should follow him into the book moments later for a cynical pull on Ayew, who had left him for dead.

Gorgeous ball into the box from Zaha, who finds Edouard unmarked in the box. The Frenchman tries to side-foot past Caballero, but he scuffs it wide.

He should have scored!

Some lovely passing and moving from Palace, as they escape from trouble, but Southampton come back with earnest.

Livramento earns the visitors a corner on the right, Palace head away but Romeu has a long-range pop.

It's speculative and he does his best to keep it down, but it clears Butland's crossbar by a metre.

Borja counters after Palace sloppily give up possession in midfield.

He feeds Smallbone on the left - perhaps a little early - but his shot is sliced horribly into the stands.

Walker-Peters is brought down by Tomkins quite recklessly from a more positive move for Southampton.

Smallbone swings in the free-kick from out on the left and he picks Broja in the melee, whose header towards the far-post is on target and well placed but not powerful enough to trouble Butland.

Gallagher with a delicate ball in and it falls to Tomkins at the far post, with Caballero putting in a good save to thwart him.

Zaha concedes a soft foul moments later, but Ayew wins possession back for Palace.

Redmond tries to link up with Walker-Peters down the left but the former's pass is slightly speculative.

Tomkins hoofs monstrously upfield and Ayew and Edouard are hungriest for the ball, winning possession back and a free-kick wide on the right in the process.

Basically a short corner for Palace.

More danger for Southampton as Caballero has to intervene at a corner with Palace looming on goal again.

Southampton need to steady the ship here!

Patrick Vieira has made a change in goal for Crystal Palace against Southampton with Jack Butland given the nod to start.

Usual first-choice Vicente Guaita was named on the bench while nursing a finger injury as Butland makes his first Premier League appearance since May.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has recalled Mohammed Salisu and Oriol Romeu after suspension and also given starts to Lyanco and Will Smallbone.

Patrick Vieira believes Conor Gallagher's loan spell with Crystal Palace has been "win-win" for all parties involved so far but stressed the importance of the midfielder continuing to play regularly.

The 21-year-old has scored six goals and made three assists for the Eagles since joining on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer.

Gallagher's form earned him an England debut last month while the Blues' own injury issues in midfield has resulted in speculation boss Thomas Tuchel could recall the academy graduate.

But Palace manager Vieira said: "I think at his age what is important is to play week in, week out.

"You are making a career not just based on your talents, but you are making a career based on the decisions you are making.

"I believe there were so many clubs around him and he made the right decision because he is playing, he is playing well and I think he is surrounded by people in this football club who look after him really well, that give him the confidence to express himself.

"I think it is a win-win. It is good for us to have a player like that because he is a talented young player and on the other side, he made the right decision coming to us because we are delivering everything that he was hoping.

"Now what is important is to maintain those performances he is having to allow him to go to a different level."

A brace in Sunday's 3-1 win over Everton made Gallagher the outright top goalscorer at Palace this term and he will aim to build on that against Southampton at Selhurst Park on Wednesday.

This is his joint-best scoring season after he found the net on six occasions during the 2019-20 campaign while on loan in the Sky Bet Championship with Charlton and Swansea, and boss Vieira compared him to a Chelsea great during Tuesday's press conference.

"Conor has this passion for the game when he is on the field like a Ray Parlour, but I would say he has maybe the quality finishing of a Frank Lampard," the Eagles manager added.

"It is a manager's dream to have a player like Conor because when he is on the field, he will give everything.

"He is focused, concentrated and will always give his best. This is something that for me is really important."
