It is only a couple of weeks out from the French Open on the clay in Paris. The ATP Tour is in Italy for the ATP Masters 1000 Rome at the Foro Italico. This is two weeks after Formula One was in Italy for the Italian Grand Prix.

It’s a clay season on the ATP Tour after Spain in the last tournament. The Italian Open is also a clay assignment, as is the Geneva Open in Switzerland. This all sounds like Rafael Nadal season.
Nadal participated in the Madrid Open and was “upset” by Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. Any player that Alcaraz beats isn’t so much an upset at this point. That goes for Novak Djokovic, who Alcaraz beat in the final as well.
Alcaraz appears like the next big thing in tennis and it’s time to get used to his name. You can get on the Alcaraz bandwagon early before he’s a household name.
He’s currently ranked No. 6 in the world, but should easily be in the top-5 by the end of the year. We’re looking at the No. 18 and No. 24 players on the ATP Tour for our first Italian Open pick.
These two are fairly equally matched with both players in good form, making for a good contest in Rome. Carreno enters the Round of 32 after breezing through Federico Delbonis.

Pablo Carreno Busta vs. Karen Khachanov Prediction:
Both players made easy work of their opponents in the Round of 64. Carreno had a Round of 64 matchup against Federico Delbonis, making it look easy in two sets.
It was an easy time for Carreno, as he sent Delbonis home with a 6-3, 6-2 win. There were multiple self-inflicted wounds in that one, so Carreno took full advantage of the free points.
He was frustrated and rattled, with Carreno smelling blood in the water. It was a nice response for the No. 18 player in the world after he was chased out of the Madrid Open in one match against Botic van de Zandschulp in an upset.
Carreno got back to basics against Delbonis, though he was aided by mistakes from his opponent. He might need better form to make this one look easy. Karen Khachanov could make this one interesting otherwise.
Khachanov is not a foe that Carreno can take lightly. He’s the 24th-ranked player in the world, so it isn’t a scrub and should have some good moments against Carreno.
Khachanov skipped past Giulio Zeppieri for a 6-3, 6-4 win in the Round of 64. Carreno is going to be a big improvement in class, though.
Having said that, Khachanov has been successful against Carreno in past matchups. He’s won four of seven meetings.
Khachanov won the last two matches against Carreno, 6-3, 6-3, and 6-0, 6-4. It’s hard to see Carreno going down that easily this time on the clay, though. He’s shown improvement since those losses and likes playing on a clay surface.
This should be a tight matchup that goes to three sets. More than 22 games looks like a good possibility in the Round of 64 between Carreno and Khachanov.
