Memorial trees planted in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee were stolen a day after her death.

The two trees were uprooted by vandals within hours of the news of the monarch’s death last week.

Volunteers at the Alderman Kneeshaw Park revealed it was not the first time they had been vandalised since their arrival earlier this year.

Debbie Jane Morrell, chair of the Friends of Alderman Kneeshaw Park, told Hull Live : "We were intending on laying a wreath to commemorate our wonderful Queen's life, but unfortunately someone has purposely brought a spade onto the park and taken our trees.”

As well as the trees, the vandals also took a commemorative plaque.

Debbie added: "The plaque was stolen not long after it went down, but found its way back to us, thanks to our community. One tree was damaged after only a couple of weeks, but again, thanks to the care of the community, it was cared for and survived.

"Then, it was found pulled up again and discarded on the park. A kind dog walker took it home, planted it in a large pot and again, this was returned to us.

"Then this Friday, the remaining two trees have been dug up - you can clearly see the spade marks.

“Previously, it has been opportunistic, this however was purposeful we believe."

The trees were planted as part of the Green Canopy campaign

The trees had been planted as part of her majesty’s Green Canopy initiative which encouraged people to plant trees in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee earlier this year.

Despite the upset caused by the trees’ disappearance Debbie said she and the volunteers at the Friends of Alderman Kneeshaw Park are determined not to let the vandals win.

Debbie added: "The trees seem almost to represent the resilience of our community and our determination not to let the small minority of antisocial behaviour win.”

Other vandalism reported at the park include a damaged satellite dish meaning people can not access the free Wi-Fi.

Reporting the news on Facebook, one unhappy person reported: “This is awful, I am so sorry to hear this.”

Another added: “Absolutely disgusting, some people are just lowlifes with no respect for anything.”

Another said of the Wi-Fi loss: “The Friends of Alderman Kneeshaw have invested in Wi-Fi for people to use on the Park.

“Sadly, today someone has pulled the satellite dish off its pole. Now no-one will be able to use Wi-Fi in the park. Until the Friends get the dish fixed back up.

“If you see anyone tampering with the dish, please tell them to stop.”
