Ivan Toney is set to be named in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the Nations League games with Germany and Italy.

The Brentford striker is set to be given a chance to stake a shock claim for a World Cup spot after a stunning start to the season and an injury to Marcus Rashford.

The former Newcastle and Peterborough forward has scored five goals so far this season - including a hat-trick against Leeds United in his last game - having registered 14 goals in all competitions in the 2021/22 season.

Tammy Abraham is thought the striker most likely to travel to Qatar as Harry Kane's backup, but Toney will also now be given a chance to fight for a place in the squad with Southgate able to select an extended group of 26 players for the tournament.

Callum Wilson has also been included in past squads but the Newcastle forward is currently suffering from a hamstring problem. Rashford is struggling with the same injury, which he sustained after scoring twice in Manchester United's 3-1 win over Arsenal earlier this month.

The selection caps an astonishing rise for Toney, who began his career at Northampton Town before moving to Newcastle, where he failed to make a single start. After loan spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe and Wigan he joined Peterborough in 2018, moving to Brentford for £5million two years later.
