The clock is ticking.
It’s been one week since Tony La Russa announced he was stepping down as Chicago White Sox manager.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports former New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies manager Joe Girardi could be on the White Sox’s short list of candidates.
The Chicago White Sox want to hire a veteran manager to replace Tony La Russa, not wanting to take a chance on someone with no experience. Some managers who fit the bill: Bruce Bochy, Mike Shildt, Ron Washington, John Gibbons, Bo Porter, Joe Girardi, Joe Maddon.

However Nightengale reports “Bochy, Washington and Shildt are considered the leading candidates.”
Last month, Girardi said he wants to return to the dugout. Girardi managed the Yankees from 2008 to 2017, leading the club to its most recent World Series title in 2009. He was fired by the Phillies in June after two-and-a-half years in the Philadelphia dugout.

If the White Sox want to go out on a limb, the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham reports Chicago could target former Yankees and New York Mets star Carlos Beltran.
Their managerial search will likely settle on somebody more attuned to making data-driven decisions. ... It’s probably time somebody gave Carlos Beltran a chance after he was fired by the Mets without getting a chance to actually manage.
Nightengale previously reported that Beltran could be a “perfect fit” for the White Sox.
The nine-time All-Star was a clubhouse leader and widely respected by everyone in his 20-year career. It’s the reason the New York Mets hired him, only to fire him before he managed a single game, when he was the only player identified in MLB’s investigation into the Astros’ 2017 cheating scandal.
Beltran returned to baseball this season as an announcer for YES Network. Last month, Nightengale reported the Mets “will strongly consider bringing Carlos Beltran back to the organization this winter ... Mets manager Buck Showalter wanted to interview Beltran to be on his coaching staff this year, but was denied by management. Yet, one year later, the Mets plan to welcome Beltran back in the organization.”
