CD Arenteiro 1-3 Atlético Madrid: Player Ratings

Carrasco and Pablo Barrios got the goals on a wet night in Ourense.

Carrasco and Pablo Barrios got the goals on a wet night in Ourense.

Starting XI:

Jan Oblak

The fourth-tier side pressed high looking for chances on goal, many of which came from a ball over the top or a cross toward the area. Oblak did well to come out on corners but conceded in the 42nd minute to a Markitos lob into the net. It’s hard to fault the keeper, who was put in a tough position. –4.5

Carrasco

Covered a lot of ground as a wing-back and couldn’t often isolate an opponent to dribble past. But Carrasco made his impact anyway, converting a spot kick in first half stoppage time, winning a penalty in the second half that Álvaro Morata missed, and scoring a breakaway goal to seal the result in the 91st minute. –7.5

Mario Hermoso

Good distribution from the backline, making simple passes up the field. Picked up a yellow card for a bad tackle, and Atlético Madrid looked better after his substitution. —6

Stefan Savić

Played down to the level of the opponent early on, failing to adapt to the muddy pitch and hitting passes too softly. He was out of position on the Markitos opener in the 42nd minute. —4

José María Giménez

Picked up a yellow early in the match, but his aggressive and forceful nature was a perfect fit for this contest. Many of his interventions or aerial duels helped the team win back possession, and he won the penalty that Carrasco slotted home at the end of the first half. — 5

Marcos Llorente

Did well to track back on defense in the first half, but didn’t spot the run of Markitos for his goal. –4

Pablo Barrios

The 19-year-old got the nod for his first official Atlético start. He overcame a few nerves early on and fought through the slippery, soggy field conditions to score the winner on 77 minutes. Barrios cut in from an outside position and struck a shot that squeezed past Diego García — his first goal for the senior team. —7

Axel Witsel

It would be easy to miss Witsel’s performance in the game, as it wasn’t flashy, but the midfielder was effective on both ends. He made the right passes to keep possession and build the attack. On defense, the veteran kept his balance and composure to make multiple tackles to win back possession. —6.5

Koke

Attempted to bring control in moments when much of the team looked flustered. The captain looked a step slow individually though, and substitute Alber Moreno provided much more spark and invention. —5.5

Thomas Lemar

Couldn’t slice or turn into open areas as much as usual, and the pitch conditions did him no favors. But Lemar distributed the ball effectively and created multiple chances, the best one falling for Koke in the penalty area midway through the first half. —6

Álvaro Morata

Didn’t convert two one-on-one chances with the keeper, and missed his penalty kick. Looked more desperate to get that sour taste out of his mouth with a goal but settled for an assist to Carrasco to ice the game. —4.5

Subs:

Alberto Moreno

The 20-year-old midfielder made the most of his time on the pitch, assisting Barrios’ goal in the second half. —6

Reinildo

Came on for Hermoso in the 69th minute, his fresh legs helping to solidify the backline. —5

Geoffrey Kondogbia

Replaced Lemar in the 80th minute. Couldn’t make much of an impact with his limited time. –N/A
