Ecuador’s point deduction continues to create intriguing storylines early on during their 2026 World Cup qualifying run.
Colombia sits in third place early on in the CONMEBOL race for qualification. Had Ecuador not been dinged three points for an issue involving an unregistered player, they would be the ones in third.
And ironically, Bryan Castillo, born in Colombia, was the player in question.
It all sets up nicely for a World Cup qualifying meeting between the two sides in Quito on Tuesday night.

Colombia began qualifying with a 1-0 win over Venezuela and a scoreless draw against Chile last month. Last week’s 2-2 draw against Uruguay featured a late red card from Camilo Vargas, with Darwin Núñez scoring the ensuing penalty to give the visitors a share of the points.
