India's no.1 Dhiraj Bommadevara stunned in Archery Nationals

Dhiraj Bommadevara, he of the incredible low of completely missing the target twice and scoring zero at the Asian Games, before bouncing back with a team silver, is in the spotlight again. Although this time it's not great news once more, as the current Indian no.1 in recurve archery lost out to Jharkhand's Mrinal Chauhan in the semifinal of the Senior Nationals in Ayodhya.

Chauhan scored a perfect ten in the shootout after being tied 5-5, beating Bommadevara by a point. Tushar Shelke, who was part of the team that won silver alongside Bommadevara will contest the final against Chauhan. While 22-year-old Bommadevara has bounced back from worse, there's no redemption in the team event this time, as Uttar Pradesh won the men's team gold.

Wrestling Federation of India's election dates likely to be decided tomorrow

The date for the Wresting Federation of India's (WFI) elections is likely to be announced tomorrow after the Supreme Court set aside the stay imposed by Punjab and Haryana High Court today.

The ad-hoc panel appointed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had moved the apex court against the September 25 order of the HC. "I have spoken the returning officer appointed by the IOA to conduct the elections and he is waiting for the SC order. It is up to him to take a decision on when the election process will start again," ad hoc committee member Bhupender Singh Bajwa told PTI. "I think most probably, he (returning officer) will take the decision (on election date) by Wednesday," he added.

The IOA had appointed the ad-hoc committee on April 27 to run the WFI following the wrestler's protests and the panel was to hold elections within 45 days. The world body UWW had issued a warning that it would suspend WFI if the deadline to hold elections was not honoured and went ahead and did the same when it suspended the WFI on August 24 for not conducting the elections.

Former Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar was appointed as returning officer to hold WFI elections and he had set July 11 as the date for the polls. However, the Assam association moved the Gauhati High Court and got a stay on the polls on June 25. Then came anothier twist when the Andhra state association challenged the decision in the Supreme Court which quashed the Gauhati High Court decision on July 18, paving the way for the conduct of the polls.

The Returning officer then declared August 12 as the new poll date but a day before the elections, Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the process on an application moved by Haryana Wrestling Association (HWA), which was led by Deepinder Singh Hooda before being suspended by WFI. HWA had challenged the move to allow Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association to cast votes in the WFI polls.

Indian wrestlers cannot compete under the Indian flag for as long as the WFI is suspended. This was also why the Indian national flag was not displayed and the national anthem was not played when Antim Panghal won bronze at the World Championships.

Amit (51kg) had it far easier as the SSCB boxer earned a routine 5-0 victory against Maharashtra's Shivaji. The 2019 World Championships silver medalist will now take on Punjab's Jayshandeep Singh in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
