ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers will play without manager Bruce Bochy on their bench Monday night.
The team announced several hours before its game against Detroit that Bochy is dealing with a "scheduled personal matter." The team didn't elaborate on his absence, but said he was expected to return for Tuesday's game.
Will Venable, the team's associate manager, will run the Rangers for the series opener against the Tigers. Bochy told Venable on Sunday that he would be out, and made out the lineup for the game that he is missing.
The outcome will count toward Bochy's managerial record, which was 2,122-2,131 going into the game. He is 10th on the career wins list, with the most wins among active managers.
This is the first game missed by Bochy since taking over as the Rangers manager before last season, when they won their first World Series title. It was the fourth for Bochy, who previously won three championships with San Francisco, which will visit Texas next weekend.
