Newcastle United vs. Chelsea, League Cup: Preview, team news, how to watch

A fourth round of Carabao in our cup

A fourth round of Carabao in our cup

Chelsea and Newcastle, take two.

After our meeting on Sunday in the league, we now switch locations and do it all over again, but in the League Cup. This will be the fourth round (Round of 16), with the winners advancing to the quarterfinals. Since winning it all in 2015, we’ve gone out in this round more than any other: four of the last nine seasons in fact.

Let’s not make it five in ten.

Date / Time: Wednesday, October 30, 19.45 GMT; 3:45pm EDT; 1:15am IST
Venue: St James Park, Newcastle upon Tyne
Forecast: Cool
Referee: Chris Kavanagh (on pitch; no VAR)

On TV: Sky Sports Plus (UK); none (USA); elsewhere
Streaming: Sky Go (UK); Paramount+ (USA)

Newcastle team news: Anthony Gordon was a late scratch over the weekend thanks to a groin injury, but there’s a chance that he’ll be back already, healthy and fit enough to play a part. Otherwise, there are no new injuries to speak of.

Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest (on penalties) and Wimbledon in the second and third rounds, respectively, to advance this far.

Chelsea team news: We don’t have any reported injuries, but Wesley Fofana did play with an increasingly taped-up left knee on Sunday and will thus rotate out — though he would’ve done that anyway if Enzo Maresca continues to do his A/B lineup testing.

Previously: We played Newcastle, albeit not at the Bridge, in last year’s League Cup as well, in the quarterfinals. Mudryk was the hero for his last-gasp equalizer before Petrović stepped up to help us win the shootout (no extra-times or replays in the League Cup).
