The Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues will don throwback-inspired uniforms when they take the ice at Wrigley Field for the Winter Classic on Dec. 31.
Fanatics, the NHL’s official outfitter, revealed the designs Wednesday for the 16th Classic and 42nd regular-season outdoor game, one of two outdoor games scheduled this season.
Jerseys for each team feature touches that pay homage to their cities.
For the Hawks, it’s a front crest that includes stars from the city’s flag and pinstripes that bring to mind Chicago’s baseball teams. Vintage elements include lace-neck collars and cream-colored accents.
For the Blues, it’s a fleur-de-lis on the inside back neck and hem loop labels. The front of the uniform also features a “St. Louis” wordmark — the first time in team history a “Blue Note” isn’t on the chest, though a new, vintage-style “Blue Note” is on the shoulder.
Coverage of the Winter Classic begins at 4 p.m. on TNT and Max in the U.S.
The first Winter Classic took place at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. The next year, the Hawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley — the first of three times the city will have hosted an outdoor game.
Soldier Field hosted a Stadium Series game between the Hawks and Pittsburgh Penguins on March 1, 2014.
