The person, who asked to remain anonymous because the deal is not complete, said the specifics of a raise for Kiffin and his buyout have not been finalized.

The 42-year-old Kiffin has spent most of the past decade as a head coach at multiple levels, including stints with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee and Southern California. After being fired by the Trojans in 2013, he re-emerged as the offensive coordinator at Alabama, spending three seasons on Nick Saban's staff before taking over at FAU.

Kiffin signed a five-year contract with the Owls last winter and made $950,000 in basic pay in 2017.

ESPN first reported the news of Kiffin's extension Tuesday.

"This is further proof of FAU's unbridled ambition," Florida Atlantic president Dr. John Kelly told ESPN on Tuesday.

"We are grateful that the president and university are this excited about what we are doing here at FAU and into the future, although our focus remains completely on the team and this historic season finale tonight on ESPN," Kiffin told ESPN on Tuesday.
