Donovan Mitchell takes time out from playoffs to root on Lamar Jackson

Or, maybe, Lamar Jackson is set to be the Donovan Mitchell of the NFL — overlooked to a degree by scouts who see him as a tweener, leaving him with lots of motivation to prove people wrong.

Maybe this is why the two have bonded over the years as stars at Louisville, a bond that has continued even after Mitchell’s departure last year for Salt Lake City.

On Friday night, Mitchell led the Jazz into Game 6 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. But Thursday night, Mitchell took a break from the NBA and watched the NFL draft to see where his friend would be drafted, as Jackson landed in the first round as the 32nd pick to the Baltimore Ravens.

“I think he’s going to be the best quarterback,” Mitchell said. “I was excited and happy to see him drafted.”

Mitchell has stayed in close contact with Jackson while going through his rookie season. And after Jackson was drafted, Mitchell called him and the two were able to enjoy a conversation.

Mitchell admits loving when Jackson and former friends from Louisville thrive on the big stage. He knew Jackson was one of the more polarizing NFL draft prospects in what is a talent-rich quarterback class. So, when Jackson was selected, Mitchell didn’t hesitate to show his approval on social media.

“Yessssirrrrrr,” Mitchell tweeted at Jackson. “Congrats to my bro. Now go show the world what’s really good.”

And, instantly, Mitchell became a Ravens fan. He said he sent Jackson an Adidas rookie hoodie earlier this season and is expecting a gift in return from Jackson.

“I’m going to need a jersey,” Mitchell said.
