Isner Back in Cincinnati
John Isner has had some success in Cincinnati in the past playing in the final one and getting to the semifinal another time. The big-serving American did not have too much success in the past few years losing in round three last year.
Isner is getting up there in age and his movement isn’t as good as it once was but he’s still capable of winning some good matches. The serve is as good as ever and the forehand has been really stable this year as well. That makes him a tough out on any hard courts even if his record this year, 5-8 on the surface, is not that good.
The American did not play in two weeks as his final outing came in Atlanta where he lost to Jenson Brooksby in the quarterfinal. It’s unclear whether Isner suffered from some sort of injury or whether he just skipped it over by choice. Either way, he’ll be a bit rusty and will take some time to get into a solid rhytm.
The serve should carry him for a while but if he doesn’t produce a huge effort from the baseline he might be in trouble. Bonzi is a tricky matchup because it will be a match where one or two points will decide it.

Bonzi Looking Comfortable
Benjamin Bonzi is effectively playing his first full season on the ATP tour and the looks quite comfortable. There is no fear in his game, there is no panicking although there is a lack of consistency. He plays very aggressive tennis and sometimes he becomes too aggressive.
It’s a fine line to walk for him but if he could pick his moments better, he would be even better than he already is. He has a powerful serve which makes him very dangerous on these hard courts and he is not afraid to venture to the net or go for a huge winner.
All of that makes his ma nightmare matchup because, on his day, Bonzi can truly beat anyone. His record this year has been quite impressive 30-18 although he’s only 4-7 on hard courts. Cincinnati is not known to him so there will be some unfamiliarity.
He lost both matches he played so far in North America and both were against Americans. Perhaps he’ll finally find a breakthrough against Isner.
Isner v Bonzi Prediction and Tip
They played a few weeks ago in Newport and Isner won that match. It was fairly close although it should not have been because Isner squandered a huge lead in the 2nd set. Nonetheless, it proved that this matchup is one with many aces, many service winners and very few breaks.
Don’t expect many here either and any combination of an over, a tiebreak to happen or anything similar is a good bet. I lean towards Isner as the winner but the over is the best pick.
