The Bronco bowling team went to Brainerd for the Super Regional Tournament on Saturday.

After seven, 2-game matches the Broncos advanced to the second round of play. 

The final match to qualify the Broncos for state was a 2 game total pins match against Totino Grace. The Falls won the first game 192 – 189, but lost the second 212-187 and lost the match by 22 pins.

Four of the Bronco bowlers will participate in the All-Conference State Tournament on Saturday.

No games on the local schedule today, but the Bronco boys basketball team opens practice today under new head coach John Reller.

Basketball

The Rainy River men’s basketball team opened play for the 2022-23 season with a win on Friday in Ely against Itasca in a non-conference game. The Voyageurs outscored the Vikings by one point in each half of a 71-69 victory. Christian Pujals led Rainy River with 19 points, Tyrecke Francois had 14, Alexander Aguilar 12, and Steph Mereus 11.

The Voyageur men made it 2 for 2 on Saturday when they defeated Gogebic by a final of 76-63. The game was 31-29 Rainy at the half but the Voyageurs pulled away in the 2nd half.  Pujals again led the team in scoring with 17 points, Malik Siggers added 13 while Francois and Aguilar had 11. The Voyageur men will be in the Cities for a pair of games this weekend. 

The Rainy River women’s basketball led 47-35 after 3 quarters of their game on Friday in Ely against Bay College and then hung on for a 60-59 win. Shamiyah Bradford had 17 points to pace the Voyageur women. Cara Polk added 13 points, Maddie Lowe 10, and Kiarra Edley grabbed 16 rebounds.

The Rainy River women lost for the first time this season on Saturday. Gogebic held the Voyageurs in check by a score of 56-28.  Zhiyah Lesure led Rainy with 7 points. The Voyageur women will also be in the Twin Cities this weekend for 2 games.

The International Falls girls hockey team lost its home opener on Saturday to Thief River Falls 11-0. The Broncos will be at home on Friday night and Saturday afternoon for two games against Morris/Benson Area.

The Fort Frances girls hockey team made a swing through Western MN over the weekend.  On Friday, the Muskies lost to East Grand Forks 7-2. Kiera Fairnington tied the game at 1 in the first period and Teagan Mosbeck tied it a 2 early in the second before the Green Wave scored the games final 5 goals.  The Muskies then dropped a 4-0 decision on Saturday to Crookston. The Fort Frances girls are off until Monday the 28th when they travel to Kenora to face Beaver Brae.

The Fort Frances boys hockey team was in Steinbach for a tournament starting on Friday. The Muskies trounced St. Thomas Aquinas 10-0 to open the tournament before losing to the host team 4-1.  On Saturday, the Muskie edged Pembina 5-3 before losing to Steinbach in the championship game 4-3. The Fort Frances boys will be at home tomorrow night to host St. Thomas Aquinas and we will have the game on KGHS 1230 AM, 95.3 FM, and rjbroadcasting.com with the pregame at 6:45.

The Fort Frances Lakers dropped both games of a weekend series with the Red Lake Miners.  On Friday, the Miners scored five times in the second period to break a scoreless tie.  Clark Scaddan scored unassisted in the 3rd period for the Lakers as they lost 5-1.  Brenden Stroble stopped 40 shots for the Fort.  On Saturday, Jack Wood got the home team on the board with 21 seconds left in the first frame on a shorthanded tally.  Red Lake took the lead but Brady Krentz scored his first of the season to tie it a 2 going to the 3rd period.  The Miners were the only team to light the lamp in the 3rd period as they did so 3 times for the 5-2 win.  Ryan Tanner had 37 saves for the Lakers who are at home tomorrow night for a 7:30 game against Dryden.

At the state football semis on Saturday, the Deer River Warriors could not keep up on the scoreboard with Springfield as their season came to an end with a 54-30 loss. Springfield will play Minneota in the championship game after Minneota edged Fillmore Central 28-27.  Former Bronco Marc Franz and his Rogers Royals lost a tough game to Mankato West 14-10 in Class 5A. New London Spicer and Dilworth-Glyndon Felton were winners in Class 3A.  The Prep Bowl will be played on Friday, Dec. 2nd and Saturday, Dec. 3 at US Bank Stadium.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys blew past the Minnesota Vikings yesterday at U-S Bank Stadium 40-3.  Prescott connected twice with Tony Pollard on long touchdown passes as the duo helped Dallas snap Minnesota’s seven-game winning streak.  Pollard posted team highs with 109 receiving yards and 80 rushing yards.  The Cowboys have won three of four to improve to 7-3 on the year.

Kirk Cousins completed just 12-of-23 passes for 105 yards and was sacked a career high seven times.  Cousins had his streak of 39 consecutive games with at least one TD pass broken and says he is surprised by nothing anymore in the league and cannot be crushed by the point margin.  

Minnesota was held to 73 rushing yards on 17 carries.  The Vikings were handed their first loss since Week Two as they dropped to 8-2.  Vikings WR Adam Thielen, a Detroit Lakes native, says they can use this as a wake up call.

Minnesota will host New England on Thursday night.

The Bemidji State football team won their playoff game on Saturday by a final of 31-7 over Winona State. The Beavers play at No. 1 seed Angelo State on Saturday. Mankato State defeated Wayne State 26-9 in other Division 2 action. The Mavericks play at Colorado School of Mines.

In Division 3, top seed St. John’s had no problems with Northwestern of St. Paul 49-0 in the first round.  The Johnnies host Wartburg on Saturday. Bethel edged Wheaton 34-32 and will now play Linfield.

South Dakota State is the No. 1 seed in the FCS playoffs announced yesterday and a has a bye into the round of 16.  North Dakota State is No. 3 and also has a bye.  North Dakota will play at Weber State on Saturday.

The Golden Gopher women’s basketball team jumped out to a 24-3 first quarter lead and never looked back in an 82-48 win over Presbyterian yesterday at Williams Arena.  Two Minnesota players registered double-doubles in the victory.  Freshman Mallory Heyer of Chaska had 19 points and ten rebounds, while sophomore Alanna Micheaux scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards.  Heyer says they got points by running the floor in this one.

The Gophers poured it on in the second half, outscoring the visiting Blue Hose by 19 points.  Minnesota is now 3-1 on the season, while Presbyterian falls to 2-3.  The Gophers visit Virginia for a game on Saturday.

The top two teams in women’s basketball played yesterday with No. 1 South Carolina defeating No. 2 Stanford 76-71 in overtime. 

The Golden Gopher men’s basketball team will play California Baptist tonight at 9:30 in a game that can be seen on the CBS Sports Network.

No. 5 Baylor edgedNo. 8 UCLA 80-75 last night in men’s college basketball and No. 2 Gonzaga dumped No. 4 Kentucky 88-72.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are back home briefly to take on Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat tonight at the Target Center.  Minnesota will then head back out on the road for two games starting Wednesday in Indiana.  The Wolves have won three straight to even their record at 8-8 on the season.  Minnesota beat Philadelphia on Saturday night 112-109, holding on at the end.  Wolves Head Coach Chris Finch says beating Philadelphia on Saturday night was important

The MN Wild celebrated Alex Gologoski’s 1000th game in the NHL on Saturday night and then the Grand Rapids native went out and scored the game winner in overtime against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Gologoski created a turnover and then broke down the ice to get a return pass to win it 2-1.  An emotional Gologoski talked with Bally Sports following the game.

The Wild are off until Wednesday when they host the Winnipeg Jets.

Cordarelle Patterson returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the 9th time in his career to set the NFL record as the Atlanta Falcons edged the Chicago Bears 27-24

New England got an 84-yard punt return for a touchdown with 5 seconds left in the game to shock the New York Jets 10-3.

The Detroit Lions went on the road and surprised the NY Giants 31-18.

Davante Adams caught a 35 yard TD pass in overtime as the Las Vegas Raiders got by the Denver Broncos 22-16. San Francisco at Arizona in Monday Night Football.

Drew Stevens made a 21-yard field goal with 28 seconds left to lift Iowa over Minnesota for a 13-10 victory on Saturday, after the Hawkeyes forced two late turnovers to take control of the Big Ten West with their eighth straight win over the Gophers for the Floyd of Rosedale trophy.  Gopher head coach PJ Fleck says they had their chances.

Mohamed Ibrahim trampled a dominant Hawkeyes defense by rushing for a career-high 263 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries, but the sixth-year star lost just his second fumble of the season with 5:07 remaining on a third-and-4 run that would’ve given the Gophers a first down at the 9.  Jack Campbell caused the fumble and came up with an interception off a tipped pass to thwart Minnesota drives in the closing minutes for Iowa (7-4, 5-3), which would repeat as division champions and return to the conference title game by beating Nebraska on Friday.  MN plays at Wisconsin on Saturday.

Miami has dropped three straight, including yesterday’s 113-87 loss at Cleveland.  The Heat record is 7-10 on the year.  Tonight’s game tips off at 7 P-M.

Klay Thompson poured in 41 points for the Golden State Warriors in their 127-120 victory over the Houston Rockets.

The LA Lakers got 30 points and 18 rebounds from Anthony Davis as they stomped the San Antonio Spurs 123-92.

Only two games in the NHL on Sunday and both were 5-3 finals.  Columbus defeated Florida behind 47 saves from Daniil Tarasov and Sidney Crosby had another 4-point game as Pittsburgh beat Chicago.

The World Cup of Soccer started yesterday with the host country Qatar becoming the first host team to ever lose their opening game with Ecuador winning 2-0.  The schedule for Monday has England facing Iran at 7 am, Senegal vs The Netherlands at 10 am, and the United States vs Wales at 1 pm.  The game for the US can be watched on FOX.
