CLEVELAND, Ohio -- We’ve seen this before.

For the ninth time this season, the Cavaliers hunkered down in the fourth quarter, eventually riding the hot hand of Darius Garland to surge past the New Orleans Pelicans, 113-103, in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee matchup at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

The Cavaliers stymied the Pelicans, who were playing their final game of a five-game, 10-day trip.

Sound familiar? Similar to Cleveland’s fourth-quarter fiasco against Minnesota on Saturday, New Orleans’ tired legs ran out of gas in the final 12 minutes. Cleveland clamped down as the Pelicans sputtered to the buzzer.

Here’s a deeper look at how the Cavaliers (28-17) defeated the Pelicans (26-18), by the numbers:

Trailing by three, the Cavaliers and their No. 2-ranked defense put on the clamps to start the fourth quarter as the Pelicans missed their first seven shots. They snapped out of the shooting woes with a pair of CJ McCollum free throws before the Cavs added another five points to take an 11-point lead. New Orleans had two turnovers in the stretch that lasted just over six minutes.

Cleveland capitalized on New Orleans’ misfortune from the field with an 11-0 run to start the fourth, supported by five points from Garland and a handful of free throws. The Cavs took an 89-81 lead on a Jarrett Allen dunk with 8:19 left in the game.

Garland tallied 14 in the fourth while Allen added 12 in the final frame. The 26-point barrage outscored the Pelicans’ total output in the final 12 minutes, 26-22.

Garland missed his first nine shots only to supply 25 points in the second half to finish with 30 points, six rebounds and 11 assists. It was the fourth time in his career he has scored 25 or more points in a half, his fourth game with 30 or more points, and his first game with 30 or more points and 10 or more assists.

Allen added 24 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block. It was his 10th game this season with 20 or more points, and his seventh game this season with 20 or more points and 10 or more rebounds.

The shorthanded Pelicans, who were playing without starters Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson, were gassed heading into the fourth quarter. After their 0 for 7 start, they finished just 4 of 11 (36.3%) from the field. It was a stark contrast to their previous quarters where they went 11 of 18 (61%) in the third, 11 of 20 (55%) in the second and 9 of 21 (43%) in the opening quarter.

Evan Mobley tallied eight points in the first quarter on 4 of 4 shooting. All were dunks and all were assisted by four different Cavaliers. His efficient night continued as he finished 8 of 8 inside the restricted area, part of his 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go along with eight rebounds.

It was the fourth time this season that Mobley has shot 80% from the floor.

The Cavaliers hauled in 13 offensive rebounds compared to just three from New Orleans. It was part of a dominant rebounding night where they outmuscled the Pelicans, 43-28. Cleveland also captured the points in the paint battle, 52-40 and the second chance points advantage, 19-8. The Cavs entered the night third in opponents points in the paint per game (45.9).

Cavaliers small forward Isaac Okoro drew the assignment of containing McCollum. The former Trail Blazer was held to just 1 of 4 shooting with four points in the first half. He finished with 25 points on the night. According to NBA.com player tracking matchup data, Okoro held McCollum to just a single free throw in 7:26 matchup minutes.

“Isaac is going to fight,” Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “He’s going to make it difficult. Some of these guys are, they are the greatest offensive players in the world. CJ is one of the most talented offensive players we have in this league. Isaac did a really good job of just making it tough. He had to take 20 shots to get 25 points. That means you are doing your job.”

Okoro finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Cleveland notched its 11th win when trailing by double digits, and its ninth victory when trailing heading into the fourth quarter. Both are league best. It’s the 18th time this season the Cavaliers have won by double digits.
