Blazers plan to keep Robert Williams but could flip Malcolm Brogdon in another trade

Adrian Wojnarowski: That's the current tally on Damian Lillard trade, anyway: Portland plans to keep Robert Williams to pair with Deandre Ayton, sources say, but there has certainly been interest in veteran Malcolm Brogdon and expect teams will be calling on him.

Celtics beat Knicks to Jrue Holiday trade, but could Knicks now be interested in Malcolm Brogdon?
Similar player. Not as significant an impact but would have a lower price tag. Teams are calling Portland on Brogdon. More: nydailynews.com/2023/10/01/bos… – 1:16 PM
Jon Krawczynski @JonKrawczynski
Portland top 9 looks like this, right?
Scoot Henderson, Anfernee Simons, Shaedon Sharpe, Jerami Grant, Deandre Ayton, Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, Matisse Thybulle and Kris Murray. Did I miss anyone?
I know Brogdon might be on the move, but that’s not BAD. At all. – 1:03 PM

Celtics in three offseason trades:
In:
Jrue Holiday
Kristaps Porzingis
Five 2nd-round picks
Out:
Marcus Smart
Robert Williams
Malcolm Brogdon
Grant Williams
2029 unprotected 1st
Fair to question how much better they got, if at all. Making a HUGE bet on Porzingis’ health. – 12:52 PM
John Karalis @John_Karalis
Let’s rearrange this summer to get to the heart of what Brad Stevens did.
Marcus Smart is now Jrue Holiday
Robert Williams is now Kristaps Porzingis.
The defense changes a bit, and it’s all about shooting. This is leaning heavily into Mazzulla ball. – 12:51 PM
Yossi Gozlan @YossiGozlan
All eyes are now on what the Sixers and Clippers end up doing with neither team getting Jrue Holiday.
James Harden talks could revive, but the Clippers could also revisit acquiring Malcolm Brogdon. – 12:44 PM
Vivek Jacob @vivekmjacob
Brogdon picking the Celtics over the Raptors only for Boston to trade him away and end up in Toronto would be kinda funny
Raptors entering John Salmons era if it happens – 12:38 PM

Dame ➡️ Holiday ➡️ R. Williams, Brogdon ➡️ ?
Portland might keep this thing going until they own half the picks in the league. – 12:23 PM

Here’s the Damian Lillard return in Portland:
Deandre Ayton
Malcolm Brogdon
Robert Williams
Toumani Camara
2024 GSW first (top 4 protected)
2028 Milwaukee pick swap
2029 Milwaukee unprotected first
2029 Boston unprotected first
2030 Milwaukee pick swap – 12:21 PM

The Trail Blazers are committed to their young guard rotation and plan to trade Malcolm Brogdon elsewhere, per @wojespn.

Boston lands Jrue Holiday from Portland for Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams and two first-round picks, developing story at @TheAthletic: theathletic.com/4918033/2023/1… – 12:21 PM
Kevin O’Connor @KevinOConnorNBA
Blazers haul for Dame Lillard (plus Nassir Little, Keon Johnson):
Deandre Ayton
Robert Williams
Malcolm Brogdon
Toumani Camara
2024 Warriors 1st
2028 Bucks swap
2029 Celtics 1st
2029 Bucks 1st
2030 Bucks swap
Huge W for Portland to get this rather than that weak Miami deal.… – 12:18 PM
David Aldridge @davidaldridgedc
The final haul from Portland for Lillard:
•Deandre Ayton
•Malcolm Brogdon
•Rob Williams
•Toumani Camara
•2024 first (Boston)
•2029 firsts (Boston, Milwaukee)
•2028, 2030 swaps (Milwaukee)
So, that’s a little better than what we heard the Blazers “had to take” elsewhere. – 12:15 PM
Dwight Jaynes @dwightjaynes
Would assume they already have a place to send Brogdon – 12:15 PM
Jeff Goodman @GoodmanHoops
Celtics just became the NBA title favorites with the addition of Jrue Holiday.
Malcolm Brogdon didn’t want to be in Boston, and Robert Williams was unreliable.
Holiday is 33 and is still one of the better all-around point guards in the league. – 12:14 PM
Eurohoops @Eurohoopsnet
Jrue Holiday will play with the Boston Celtics ☘️
Traded by the Portland Trail Blazers for Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, and two picks, the 33-year-old American guard will begin a new chapter in the NBA:

Subtracting Robert Williams from the roster when Boston already let Grant Williams go leaves it less equipped to deal with Giannis, Embiid & Bam in the East. Boston is praying Porzingis stays healthy. – 12:13 PM
Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
Final tally on Lillard trade: Portland gets Deandre Ayton, Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, Toumani Camara, three first-round picks 2024 (Golden State, Top-4 protected), 2029 (Bucks and Celtics unprotected) and 2028 and 2030 Milwaukee pick swaps. – 12:12 PM
Yossi Gozlan @YossiGozlan
The Boston Celtics frontcourt is now thinner with the loss of Robert Williams III. First and second restrictions will limit how they can replace him via trade.
But for a player like Jrue Holiday, they felt it was best to acquire him and worry about fixing the frontcourt later. – 12:12 PM

It might have been tough for the Blazers to move on from the Dame Time era, but that’s a hell of a return: Three first-round picks, two pick swaps, Ayton, Brogdon, RobWilliams. Could flip some players for more picks. Good work. And the Bucks-Celtics ECF will be incredible. – 12:10 PM

New haul for Lillard: Ayton, Brogdon, Williams and three firsts. And Joe Cronin isn’t done. Brogdon, coming off a 6MOY season, and Williams, an elite defender, are very tradable pieces. Could be 4-5 firsts by the time the dust settles. – 12:09 PM

2023-24 Boston Celtics starting lineup

Championship caliber group. Huge upgrade for the Celtics. #Celtics #NBA12:08 PM
Brian Robb @BrianTRobb
Celtics giving up the 2 firsts plus Rob Williams here for Holiday is quite the all-in push. If ownership is willing to spend to retain Jrue Holiday, it could be a home run move as long as front office can find sufficient help for frontcourt. – 12:08 PM

Boston has a lot of injury/decline risk in that Horford/Porzingis frontcourt but Jrue/White/Brown/Tatum is ferocious.
Are we on Brogdon/RobWill trade watch now? How far can we string this along? – 12:04 PM
Ben Anderson @BensHoops
A lot of pressure on Kristaps Porzingis now to stay healthy and contribute throughout the playoffs.
Celtics are certainly contenders, but that’s a lot for potentially one year of Jrue.
Also, Portland might get another first out of flipping Time Lord and Brogdon. – 12:03 PM
Justin Garcia @tmjgarcia
All told, three 1st rounders (two are unprotected picks at the end of the decade from teams in win now), two pick swaps, DeAndre Ayton and Robert Williams and I’m sure Malcom Brogdon will eventually become some type of asset.
Yeah, I’d say this was better than the Heat offer – 12:02 PM
Chris Mannix @SIChrisMannix
Absolutely the right move for Boston. They will miss Robert Williams — and they really need another body in that frontcourt now— but they needed Holiday more. Regain the wing defender they lost in the Smart trade—one that’s going to be motivated to play Milwaukee. – 12:02 PM
Bobby Manning @RealBobManning
Said on @TheGardenReport that im trading Rob & Brogdon, not Horford, if im the #Celtics and that’s what they did. I can get behind this deal. – 12:01 PM

I bet a Brogdon trade happens sometime today, with a team we haven’t considered for at first blush appears to be an underwhelming return for the Celtics. – 11:37 AM

More on this storyline

Andrew Greif: Some around the NBA in recent days believed the pursuit of Jrue Holiday was down to Boston and the Clippers. How close they truly came, I’m not sure. But to state the obvious, Brogdon — a guy LAC went pretty far down the road in looking at — heads to PDX and could be flipped. -via Twitter @AndrewGreif / October 1, 2023

Stevens also touched on the status of Williams, who is healthy and enters a pivotal season. “He’s not an old guy, but he’s not a rookie anymore,” Stevens said. “He’s six years in now and this is the time where guys make leaps and make jumps. He showed his defensive versatility a couple of years ago. His offensive threat at the rim and his rebounding is as good as it gets, and the keys for him are to be available as much as possible and to be able play as long as spurts as possible. -via Boston Globe / September 30, 2023
