Villanova Wildcats

The Wildcats posted an 11-10 record over their first 21 games this year. That run featured a five-game losing streak in January. Villanova is 5-2 in their last seven however. The wins in that time have come versus Providence, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Butler and Georgetown again.

In the rematch versus the Hoyas on Tuesday, the Wildcats came out of halftime with a dominant 43-19 edge. Villanova kept it going in the second half with a 32-28 run in an eventual blowout 75-47. Leading team scorer Eric Dixon posted 22 points with six rebounds and two assists.

Providence Friars

Over on the Providence side, they were sitting at 14-6 through 20 games. The Friars would then lose three of the next four to UConn, Villanova and Butler before a win streak versus St. John’s, DePaul and Xavier. In their last game Providence fell to Marquette on the road, however.

On Wednesday in the Marquette matchup, the Friars went into the break trailing by a significant 50-26 margin. Providence’s offense picked up in the second half on 43 points, but by then it was too late in a 91-69 blowout loss. Devin Carter was tops on his 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.

ANDREW’S FREE VILLANOVA VS PROVIDENCE PREDICTION

I’ll try Villanova in this one. The Wildcats didn’t have any trouble with a struggling Georgetown team in their last outing. Villanova shot 53.2 percent from the field in that one and held the Hoyas to just 27.5 percent on the other side. The 48.1 percent from 3-point range (13-of-27) helped as well. In each of their last four wins, the Wildcats have scored 70 or more points. In their last two losses they’ve been below 55 points.

Villanova took a 68-50 home victory the last time these teams saw each other back on February 4. The Wildcats held the Friars to just 29.4 percent shooting in that one and scored 21 points off 13 Providence turnovers. The Friars have been playing pretty well lately overall and should put up a decent fight in this home rematch. That said Villanova should still have the inside track on a cover as the better team.

Andrew’s Pick Villanova Wildcats -2.5
