TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A Tarboro basketball coach went viral on social media this year with a video of his son mimicking his every move.

“I remember one day I noticed Christopher was kneeling on one knee and he was behind me doing the same thing,” said Tarboro High School Varsity Basketball Coach Reggie Bess.

His 5-year-old son Christopher Bess is known as Lil Coach Bess and he’s tough.

“He means business when he steps on a basketball court and it’s just amazing to see someone that can code switch like he does,” said Bess. “I like to hang out with my dad because I want to be a coach,” said Christopher Bess.

Coach Bess says his journey to fatherhood started with his own father.

“I just look at how he raised me into the man that I’ve become,” said Bess.

Bess doesn’t just coach, but says he serves as a role model of sorts to his students.

“I am not just a father to my own kids, but I am father to a lot of kids as well. I love talking to them and giving them real life situations. We have real talks,” said Bess.

It’s a role he takes seriously, especially with his four kids. He says one of them actually plays on the Tarboro High varsity basketball team. He says Lil Coach Bess doesn’t cut his big brother any slack as they gear up for next season.

“We need to come out strong and win,” said Christopher Bess.

Lil Coach Bess says he knows there’s one thing special about his dad. “He helps people,” said Christopher Bess.

It’s something this kid has taken in and is looking towards his own future.

“I am going to be a basketball coach just like my dad,” said Christopher Bess.

Coach Bess says the impact he has made on his son and other students is priceless.

“I just felt like God has me here for a reason,” said Bess.
