Valtteri Bottas has joined Daniel Ricciardo in taking a grid penalty for Sunday's season-opening Australian GP after his heavy shunt in qualifying.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff confirmed the gearbox in Bottas' W09 had been damaged in his crash with the Turn Two barriers at the start of his first Q3 lap - an impact that measured 27G.

With Mercedes' changing the gearbox, Bottas drops down from 10th to 15th on the grid.

"We were lucky because it was a big shunt," said Wolff. "The chassis is ok, the gearbox not. Five [places penalty]."

Mercedes have also changed two engine elements as precaution, installing a new energy store (ES) and control electronics (CS) unit. The team say both elements will be returned to their Brackley base and checked over for damage, with the hope they can be used again later in the season.

No further penalty is applied, but only two of these elements can be used for the whole of the 21-race season.

Ricciardo, who qualified fifth, already knew he would drop down three places from where he qualified after a controversial ruling from the stewards on Friday night over an incident in second practice.

The Red Bull driver was penalised for failing to slow sufficiently in two 'mini marshalling' sectors and he will now drop to eighth on the grid after setting the fifth-quickest Q3 time.

As it stands, none of the other 18 drivers face penalties for the season-opener which starts at 6.10am on Sky Sports F1.

Lewis Hamilton starts on pole for the fifth consecutive season at Albert Park ahead of Ferrari pair Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel. Max Verstappen is fourth in the lead Red Bull and, like Ricciardo, will start on the more durable supersoft tyres compared to the rest of the top 10, who start on ultrasofts.

Bottas's demotion will promote Fernando Alonso into 10th after both McLarens missed out on Q3.
