With the Copa Libertadores final against Mexican club side, Tigres still yet to be played, River Plate know that they will be South America’s representative at the FIFA Club World Cup that will be held in Japan in December. Tigres overcame Brazilian side Internacional 3-0 in Mexico and they will be the representative from the ConcaCaf region.
River Plate will now participate in their first Club World Cup tournament and fans of “Los Millonarios” are already dreaming of coming up against FC Barcelona in the final. At present, Barça, Tigres, Auckland City and River Plate are the confirmed representatives with the champions from Africa, Asia and a Japanese side yet to be determined.
River played in two previous Intercontinental Cup’s, both held in Japan. In 1986 they overcame Rumanian side, Steaua Bucarest and lost in 1996 to Juventus.
Marcelo Gallardo’s River now play Tigres in the Copa Libertadores final with the first leg being held in Monterrey on July 29 and the return leg in Argentina on August 5th.
