Today’s Madrid-City game is expected to fill the 100.000 seats of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The organizers of the event officially announced that the game was sold-out yesterday. The cheapest match ticket was priced at 55 euro with 180 being the asking price for the most expensive tickets in the stadium. Early yesterday morning only the higher priced tickets remained and these were snapped up as the day progressed.
It’s anticipated that the Melbourne Cricket Ground (built in 1954 for the Melbourne Olympics of 1956), will see a crowd higher tan for the 95.446 fans who witnessed 2013’s Melbourne Victory-Liverpool match. The highest crowd for any sporting event at the Melbourne ground was an Australian Rules football match in 1970 between Collingwood and Carlton which saw a crowd of 121.696 fans pack the stadium. Only one game of football (soccer) has broken through the 100.000 barrier and that was the 2000 Sydney Olympics football final between Cameroon and Spain which was attended by a crowd of 104.098 spectators.
