Louis Van Gaal has covered his goalkeeping position with the new signing of Sergio Romero from Sampdoria. United officially announced his signing early this morning given the uncertainty surrounding Spanish stopper, David de Gea. The Spaniard is out of contract next year and is hoping to move to Real Madrid this summer.
Van Gaal explained the signing on the Old Trafford club’s website: “I know Sergio well. Irrespective if De Gea moves or not, we need to be ready and that’s why Sergio's acquisition is a positive step for the club”.
“Romero is an Argentinean international and was at AZ Alkmaar when he was 19 years old and is extremely talented. He’s a great shot-stopper but also good with his feet; this is an important factor for our style of play. He’s a tall keeper and strong physically and a person with great self-confidence”.
Meanwhile De Gea is still carrying out his pre-season preparation with Manchester United and played against Barça on Saturday. After the game Van Gaal declared: “I want him to stay but with the rules of football, you never know what may happen”
