Reports in England suggest the Premier League club are seriously considering keeping the goalkeeper and allowing him to leave on a free transfer next summer.

Manchester United will keep hold of David de Gea this season if Sergio Ramos stays at Real Madrid. According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League club would allow De Gea to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer next summer when his contract runs out. The financial stability of the club means they would not need the €20-30 million Madrid could offer for the goalkeeper this summer.

The English club have already signed Sergio Romero, a goalkeeper who Van Gaal was in charge of at AZ Alkmaar. The Argentine goalkeeper could be the replacement for De Gea. “There is a threat that he [De Gea] could go,” Van Gaal acknowledged at Romero’s presentation. Madrid have also plugged the gap left by the departure of Iker Casillas by signing Kiko Casilla from Espanyol. He will compete with Keylor Navas for the starting role.

The latest talks between Ramos and Madrid president Florentino Pérez have cooled the negotiations for the goalkeeper, although the relationship between Madrid and United has been good so far. The deals taking Cristiano Ronaldo to Madrid or Ángel di Maria to United, as well as last season’s loan deal of “Chicharito” Hernández, serve as a good example of the relationship between the clubs.
