Lewandowski condemns Benítez to first Real defeat

Bayern Munich won the Audi cup with the Polish striker’s goal at the end.

With no Bale or James in the starting line-up Madrid were in it right up to the 87th minute of the Audi Cup final, with the two European giants trading spells of dominance and goal-scoring chances.

Lewandowski, who missed an open goal just minutes before, made up for that with a run onto a free-kick that let him get to the ball just ahead of Keylor Navas, who was stuck on his line. The Polish striker stabbed home, giving Bayern the win and Pep some breathing room.

With Isco in the central attacking midfield role, Madrid came out with the enthusiasm of the youngsters on display. Lucas Vázquez and Cheryshev ran down the wings and Jesé, though less incisive than yesterday, was still an active threat. Kroos tried a few from distance and Madrid worried Bayern at deadball situations. Brych missed a clear penalty on Ramos.

In the second half Bayern were more on top, giving Keylor Navas a chance to shine, making several decent saves. Bayern kept probing though, with Douglas Costa a handful for Carvajal, Arbeloa and Nacho. Lewandowski’s goal decided it.
