New York Cosmos overcame New York City in the 4th round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup last night in New York. City’s Ghanian star, Kwadwo Poku scored twice top put the MLS side ahead. Cosmos kept the faith and managed to tie the game through goals from Leo Fernandes and Lucky Mkosana. They were the team with greater desire and were worth winners after a penalty shoot- out.

The East River Derby saw Raúl start for Cosmos but there was no place for David Villa in the City starting XI. The Shuart Stadium was packed with the 11.456 fans creating a spectacular atmosphere which included 1.000 City fans. Despite it being the first time both teams faced each other, the tie had all the ingredients of a classic derby match.

In the end New York City FC lost out after the penalty shoot out. The ‘villain’ of the night however was Jason Kreis. The City coach deprived the world of watching Raúl and David Villa playing together some six years later.

After Atlanta Silverbacks losing to the NY Red Bulls, the Cosmos are the only NASL team remaining in the competition as it enters its fifth round stage. The draw for this round takes place later today.
