Manchester City rewrote the Premier League record books as Yaya Toure bid an emotional farewell to the Blues.
Champions City endorsed their status as the best team in the land by reaching 96 points, eclipsing Chelsea’s record of 95, set in 2004.
And their second goal, scored by Bernardo Silva, set a new Premier League record of 104 for the season, taking them past Chelsea’s haul of 103. Fernandinho’s strike later took the total to 105.
It was the perfect way for Toure to sign off, after eight trophy-laden years, during which time he helped City emerge from the giant shadow of their more illustrious neighbours Manchester United.
Toure, making his 316th and final appearance for City, was made captain for the night and led the side out to a rapturous reception.
The first chant of ‘Yaya, Yaya Toure’ came within a minute of kick-off, with cries of ‘Shoot!’ whenever the towering midfielder was in possession.
Although he has been part of the supporting cast for the past two years and made just 17 appearances this season, Toure’s contribution to City’s emergence cannot be underestimated.
The Ivory Coast international, who signed from Barcelona for £24million back in 2010, was one of the pivotal figures in City’s emergence as one of the dominant forces in English football.
A scorer of key goals, including the winner in the 2011 FA Cup final as City landed their first trophy in 35 years, the catalyst for their three subsequent title triumphs, Toure has been a colossus for the Blues.
He plundered a remarkable 24 goals from midfield as City claimed their second Premier League crown in 2014, and while his best days are now behind him, Toure still provided glimpses of his formidable ability.
He embarked on one of his trademark surging runs just before the half-hour, beating two opponents and delighting the home crowd, before crossing for Gabriel Jesus, who hit the side netting.
In the 42nd minute, City’s fans broke into a collective round of applause, honouring Toure, whose has worn the No.42 shirt throughout his career with the Blues.
City boss Pep Guardiola paid tribute to Toure and said: “Where we are now is because of what he has done.
“We cannot forget that during the managership of Roberto Mancini, and especially Manuel Pellegrini, that Yaya was the key player.”
City took the lead in the 16th minute, Leroy Sane bursting through the middle and feeding Danilo, who produced a composed finish for a defender.
But City’s lead lasted four minutes, Claudio Bravo raced from his line but failed to collect the ball, allowing Davy Propper to cross and Leonardo Ulloa to level the score with a header.
The Blues restored their lead in the 35th minute, Sane picking out Silva, who buried a low left-footed shot beyond the reach of Mat Ryan.
Fernandinho made it 3-1 in the 71st minute, Sane again the provider after a cleverly-worked corner involving Ilkay Gundogan.
After the game, Toure’s older brother and former City team-mate, Kolo, presented the midfielder with a lifetime season ticket, as well as a framed shirt with 316 on the back.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Manchester City break the Premier League record for most points in a season with their 3-1 win over Brighton. The club have also scored the most goals in a Premier League campaign, reaching 105 on the term, surpassing Chelsea this evening. The strikes came from Danilo, Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho, who delivered the win, which never appeared to be in doubt despite Leonardo Ulloa's first-half leveller for the Seagulls. Pep Guardiola's men can reach the 100-point mark with a victory in their final match of the term against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.
