Athletic Club Bilbao and Iker Muniain reached an agreement this morning that will see the player stay at San Mamés until June 30, 2019. His exit clause is unchanged and is still 45 million euro, the club confirmed this morning.
This renovation comes just a year after his last contract renewal which saw Munain commit to the cub through to 2017 and saw an increase in his buy-out clause which rose from 37.5 million euro to the current 45 million euro.
The player won’t be able to join up with his team-mates when Athletic resume pre-season training next Wednesday as Munain is still recovering from his cruciate ligament injury operation which was carried out on May 7th.
According to a rough schedule which the club medical team have imparted, the player is unlikely to re-appear this year with everything pointing to an early 2016 return to playing for the 22 year old. He damaged his cruciate in the league game away to Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan on April 4.
Muniain made his debut with the first team in 2009 in a Europa League game against Swiss outfit, Young Boys. He was 16 years, 7 months and 11 days old and became the youngest player in Athletic club history to play for the first team.
