Four days ago UEFA opened an extraordinary case against Barcelona on the basis of the airing of independence chants and the massive presence of stellate flags during the Champions League final that was contested between the Spanish champions and Juventus on June 6 in Berlin. Barça, as Público has revealed, have been presented with the prospect of a strong fine (€50,000) and even partial closure of a part of the stands at the Camp Nou for the first Champions League match of next season.
The UEFA report made clear the excess of political and separatist content that took place on June 6. And as Público pointed out, UEFA have received several other reports in which the same behaviour was reported throughout the season. The case that has been opened against the Camp Nou club will be analysed on July 23 at UEFA’s Disciplinary Committee once the transfer of the case file is given to Barcelona to allow them to prepare and present relevant arguments that they deem appropriate.
In the event that part of the Camp Nou stands are closed, Barcelona, according to Público, will be obliged to cover that sector of the stadium with a specific canvas and it will have to show a message in defence of the values of Fair Play. This closure would be accompanied by a fine.
On June 8, AS posed a question to UEFA about this theme and the possibility of proceedings being opened against Barcelona. It was denied by UEFA’s spokesman in Spain, Borja Bilbao, and UEFA’s press officer Thomas Giordano.
