New York Liberty women's basketball star Sabrina Ionescu is about to have a very big weekend. For starters, she's up for Athlete of the Year at the People’s Choice Awards. The big nomination only makes sense considering this point guard has set all kinds of records in recent years, including becoming the first WNBA player in history to record more than 500 points, 200 rebounds, and 200 assists in a single season back in 2022. Sabrina will also be competing in a three-point contest against Stephen Curry this weekend, so she'll certainly be busy.
And if you happen to catch Sabrina’s various appearances, you might notice a man cheering her on or snapping cute couples pics with her on the red carpet. Wondering who he is? Meet Sabrina’s fiancé, Hroniss Grasu.
Hroniss is a famous athlete in his own right, and the two have been together for quite a while. So, if you're dying to learn more, here’s everything to know about Hroniss:
His parents are from Romania.
Hroniss is the baby of a large Romanian family, according to The Oregonian. His parents, Ștefan and Mariana Grasu, moved to Los Angeles from Romania in the 1980s to open a pizza shop. The Oregonian notes that his cousins would line up to kiss and hug him when he was little.
Sabrina and Hroniss both went to the University of Oregon.
Hroniss played center for the University of Oregon’s football team, where he was a four-year starter, according to his school bio. He was also a three-time Pac-12 first-team all-conference honoree.
Sabrina began her freshman year at the university in 2012, and Hroniss left for the pros after the 2014 season.
He plays for the NFL.
Hroniss was a third-round draft pick in 2015, and is now playing as an offensive lineman for the Las Vegas Raiders. He previously played for the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, and San Francisco 49ers, per the NFL site. All in, he's played in the league for seven years.
Of course, Sabrina supports her fiancé at his games, too. In 2022, she shared a photo on Instagram of herself wearing his jersey. “Being able to support one another in our pro careers is something I’ll never take for granted,” she wrote in the caption.
Talk about an athletic power couple!
He’s 32 years old.
He may be the baby of his family, but Hroniss is now 32. Sabrina, on the other hand, is 26 years old.
They’ve been publicly dating since 2021.
These two went Instagram official in 2021. At the time, Sabrina shared several photos of the two of them on Instagram with the caption, “Happy Birthday to my person! Always smiling with you????.”
They got engaged in January of 2023.
Sabrina causally dropped her big news on Instagram in January 2023, alongside a photo of Hroniss kneeling in front of a massive floral display and candles. “It’s always us???? here’s to forever with you – 1.20.23 #finally,” she wrote.
Sabrina later shared on TikTok that she thought she was doing a photo shoot for GQ, but Hroniss had worked with her agents to throw her off. “I was completely shocked and off-guard. I really had no idea,” she said.
The couple later had what Sabrina hilariously called a "big fat Romanian engagement party," in pics she shared on Instagram:
And based on the photos, it looked like quite the party!
