David Silva's goal against Belarus in Barysaw, which handed Spain a 1-0 victory and ensured their second place in qualifying Group C remained intact, made him the seventh-highest scorer in the history of La Roja with 23 strikes. In doing so the Manchester United midfielder equaled Alfredo di Stéfano's tally for his country.
Silva scored three times under Luis Aragonés and has now scored 20 under the tutelage of Vicente del Bosque. Only two players have banged in more under the mustachioed mastermind than Silva: David Villa and Fernando Torres.
Villa still tops the list of all-time scorers for Spain with 59 goals in 97 appearances. El Guaje is followed by Raúl (44 in 102) and Torres (38 in 110). Silva is now three shy of Emilio Butragueño's haul of 29 international goals.
