Serena Williams became the oldest Grand Slam champion at the age of 33, and has now won 21 singles titles; her sixth victory at Wimbledon came as she beat Garbiñe Muguruza 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour 22 minutes. The Spanish contender actually started the stronger of the two, breaking William’s serve early in the first set. However, the American’s dominance began to tell as came back to claim the first set 6-4 and raced into a 5-1 second-set lead. Muguruza showed considerable fighting spirit to save a championship point and claw her way back to 5-4. But in the end she just fell short and couldn’t capitalise on her resurgence, losing the next game and with it the title.

The 21-year-old Spaniard, making her first Grand Slam final appearance, couldn’t hold back the tears as Williams sealed victory, but, as Martina Navratilova said, “Garbiñe is very young and for sure she’ll be in a final like this again”. Meanwhile, with this victory, her 21st Grand Slam title, Serena Williams is now only one away from Steffi Graf’s 22.
