Nottingham Forest are said to be interested in recruiting Sao Paulo midfielder Jhegson Mendez.

According to South American football journalist Joaquin Saavedra, Forest are "very interested" in Mendez, claiming "there are talks" between the two parties and the player's representatives.

The 26-year-old represented Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup. He later joined Sao Paulo on the expiration of his contract with MLS outfit Los Angeles.

In Brazil, he fell down the pecking order under new boss Dorival Junior and is currently behind Luan, Pablo Maia and Gabriel Neves for selection.

Forest are said to have identified the midfielder as an option to bolster Steve Cooper's squad this summer. Mendez is regarded as a promising player, being described as "one of the best" in the Ecuador national team.

"Hopefully one of the best players from Ecuador in the World Cup can go to Europe," Saavedra added.

Speaking about Mendez's lack of minutes, Junior explained: "There's a few players I haven't had the opportunity to observe and Mendez is one of them. He's a player with a very good technical level. I just asked for one or two details so that we can count on him at important times. He's a very good player, I just asked for one or another detail."
