Alejo Veliz will have the opportunity to make his full Sevilla debut in a dream setting on Sunday evening. Following a 0-0 draw with Valencia last time out, Los Nervionenses make the trip to the Santiago Bernabeu to take on La Liga leaders Real Madrid.
Very much a dream moment for all players, Veliz will be hoping his game time comes from the start against Los Blancos after making his Sevilla debut off the bench last weekend. Arriving from Tottenham still trying to work his way back to full fitness after sustaining a knee injury in the win over Bournemouth on New Year's Eve, the striker watched on from the sidelines against Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid before getting the final four minutes of the Valencia stalemate.
Now back to full fitness for Quique Sanchez Flores, Veliz will be raring to go as Sevilla look to carry on their good recent form and continue to move away from the drop zone altogether.
"Yes, I feel 100% now," said the 20-year-old in an interview with Spanish publication AS. "I trained as hard as I could so that the coach could throw whatever he wanted at me. What Quique says is nice and motivates me, it helps me on a daily basis and to give my best. Now we have to give it back to him and Sevilla on the field."
On the prospect of facing Real Madrid, he said: "Going to the Bernabeu is something incredible. Going from playing there on PlayStation to doing it for real... I'm going to try to enjoy it, but with the responsibility that comes with it. I will do my best. I think Sevilla is in a great moment, we have to take advantage of it to get the three points no matter how difficult Real Madrid is."
Had things worked out differently for Veliz, he could well have been lining up for Real Madrid against Sevilla on Sunday evening. After making his name in his homeland of Argentina with Rosario Central and with Argentina's Under-20s, Los Blancos were linked with a move for Veliz but a deal was never finalised.

"Yes, the newspapers wrote about it and some time ago my agent told me about Real Madrid's interest, but nothing materialised," he explained. "It was the South American Under-20 period, I had only been in the First Division in Argentina for a short time and I wanted to continue playing in Rosario. Even after the Under-20 World Cup.
"I am a calm boy, I take things with patience and I believe in God a lot, it allows me to concentrate as best as possible on my path."
Instead joining Tottenham in the summer on a permanent deal, Veliz made a total of eight appearances off the bench for Ange Postecoglou's side in the first part of the campaign. A big step for the player last summer as he left his family behind in Argentina, Veliz settled into life in the capital extremely well thanks to Tottenham's South American contingent and former Sevilla man Bryan Gil and is very happy in London as a result.
"In fact, I'm still learning English. Yes, it is complicated to leave Rosario at 19 years old and go to London," said the frontman. "Going to Tottenham was a very beautiful illusion, it is a very big club. But that dream carries a responsibility and leaving things aside in Argentina, far away.
"First I was alone and then my family was able to accompany me. The climate, the city and the people are very different but the Argentinians there helped me a lot and also Bryan Gil. Seville is much more similar to Rosario than London. I am very happy here."
Sevilla's Argentine stars have also helped Veliz settle into life at his new club, with former Tottenham ace Erik Lamela playing a key role.
"The first thing I did was contact Lamela, [Marcos] Acuna, [Lucas] Ocampos... and they encouraged me to come too," revealed Veliz. "I stayed two nights at Erik's house and we created a nice bond.
"But in general I have been surprised by the kindness of the people in Seville and at Sevilla. That fulfils you a lot, people are wonderful."
Tottenham's loan agreement with Sevilla for Veliz does not contain a purchase option, thus highlighting that he is indeed a big part of Postecoglou and the club's plans going forward. While of course he cannot give any guarantees about how his future will play out later down the line, the ex-Rosario Central striker is just happy to be with Sevilla and he is intent on having a successful time with the Spanish club.
"I do not know what will happen," said the striker. "If I stay, time will tell. To begin with, Sevilla and its fans must be comfortable with me. Because I am delighted to have come and I hope that many good things happen."
