Looking to change the narrative of preseason, Chelsea made a positive start to the game and almost got on the scoresheet inside of the first few minutes.
Unfortunately, the already far too familiar shambolic defending quickly came back to the forefront, and Real would take advantage twice in the first half hour. Individual mistakes, bad execution, silly turnovers, and massive gaps — Real couldn’t help but take advantage of them. They probably could’ve scored a handful; they would settle for just two.
Chelsea did pose the occasional threat but our execution in the final third was almost as bad as in defense. Eventually, and once Real took their foot off the gas after the first half hour, they took pity on us and allowed Noni Madueke to head in at the far post on a nice ball in by Enzo.
The second half opened in energetic fashion, and both teams missed some excellent opportunities. Then came all the substitutions, and as usual, the match descended into truly just a bit of running about.
Carefree.
- Starting lineup: just about our first-choice lineup at the moment?
Jorgensen | Gusto (inverting from the left), Badiashile, Colwill, James | Lavia | Sterling, Enzo, Nkunku, Madueke | Guiu - Mudryk (for Sterling) and Caicedo (for Lavia) on early in the second half
- Nice to see Toni Rudiger still being Toni Rudiger. Good luck this season, friend.
- Next up: going home; one more friendly coming up this weekend, against Inter Milan, then it’s time for the real thing (*gulp*)
