Newcastle United come up against Paris Saint-Germain in the club's first Champions League game at St James' Park in more than 20 years and the club's boyhood fans know all about the famous nights of the past

Kieran Trippier has revealed that his Geordie team-mates have told the group all about Newcastle United's 'special' Champions League wins as this side bid to write their own chapter in the competition against PSG.

Newcastle welcome the Ligue 1 champions to St James' Park on Wednesday night in what will be the club's first home game in the Champions League in more than two decades. Eddie Howe has predicted it will be 'one of those magical nights in our stadium' that he 'can't wait to experience'.

Trippier is no different. Trippier is an England international with vast experience of playing in the competition, having even reached the final with Spurs, but the right-back knows how far the club has come since he joined less than two years ago, readily admitting that he 'never thought' he would be back on this stage so quickly again.

It is a return to a stage Geordies certainly have fond memories of. Newcastle defeated Barcelona in 1997 - PSG boss Luis Enrique was on the losing side that night - while defender Andy Griffin fired the black-and-whites to an unforgettable 1-0 victory against Juventus five years later. Dan Burn was sitting in the East Stand with his father, David, when Newcastle beat Juventus while Sean Longstaff used to watch 'Flying High', the video that documented that memorable campaign, all the time.

Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy and goalkeeper Mark Gillespie are also boyhood fans and the squad have certainly not had to look too far into the recent past for inspiration in this competition.

"All the Geordie boys in our team have mentioned that quite a lot of the time to be honest," Trippier told reporters. "There's been so many special nights here. It's been a long time since the club has been in the Champions League so it's brilliant for people in the city, everyone connected with the club, that we're back. Tomorrow night is going to be a very special occasion for everyone involved in the club."
