Sir Alex Ferguson has been urged to stay away from Manchester United's current transfer saga with Cristiano Ronaldo by Stan Collymore.

Ronaldo is looking to force his way out of the Red Devils just a year after rejoining United. Showdown talks with Erik ten Hag didn't go to plan - and United even drafted in Sir Alex to try and convince Ronaldo to stay put.

But now Sir Alex - who was Ronaldo's first boss at United - has been warned to stay away from the saga altogether. Collymore has suggested the Scot's presence "undermines" Ten Hag at United.

Writing for The Mirror, he said: "My heart sank when I saw Sir Alex Ferguson driving into Manchester United ’s training ground for a meeting with Cristiano Ronaldo. The Scot shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the place.

"It’s not for him to dictate the outcome of the stand-off between the player and the club. That’s down to Erik ten Hag.

"Fergie is casting such a long shadow over Manchester United that it completely undermines the Dutchman. The former boss has to be moved on. The umbilical cord MUST be cut."

Cristiano Ronaldo is wanting to leave Man United

Ronaldo is part of the Red Devils' squad for their friendly with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the clash Ten Hag said: "Tomorrow he will be in the squad. We'll see how long he can play

"I cannot tell in this moment (how fit he is). He is not on the level of the rest of the squad because he missed a lot of weeks. But he needs games and he needs training, a lot."
