PSV host Feyenoord in the Dutch Super Cup, with the winner claiming the Johan Cruijff Shield and a good deal of early momentum to go into the new season.
This clash will pit the two teams who were by some stretch the best clubs in the Netherlands last season against each other. It was PSV who ultimately claimed the league title, dropping only 11 points along the way, yet Feyenoord, who saw manager Arne Slot leave for Liverpool in the summer, suffered only two defeats in 34 games, highlighting their qualities.
Combined, these clubs scored more than 200 Eredivisie goals between them in 2023-24, meaning this should be a cracker.

PSV v Feyenoord Best Bets
PSV are a decent price at 1.73 to win this match. They have, so far, managed to retain their top stars throughout the summer whereas this Feyenoord side is in transition, with several regular starters struggling or just coming back from injury and a new system to be put in place.
Another tempting pick for this match is Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez to score anytime at 3.50 with Betfair. The Mexico international scored 0.87 goals per 90 in the Eredivisie last season and will be the focal point of their attack. He was somewhat quiet in the Copa America but early elimination from that competition has given him the opportunity to stay fresh. PSV struggled to pin the 23-year-old down last season. He scored twice against them in four appearances, posting 1.7 xG across those two games.

PSV are coming into the new campaign on apparently stable ground, having managed to retain manager Peter Bosz and all of the stars that led them to the Eredivisie title last season.
Pre-season results, though, have been mixed. They were thumped 3-0 by Anderlecht in their first significant friendly match, were only able to draw 1-1 with Club Brugge a week later and have since recorded one-goal wins over both FC Eindhoven and Valencia.
Their men in form have been Ismael Saibari, who netted both goals in the win over Valencia last weekend, and Ricardo Pepi, who grabbed a hat-trick against Eindhoven only to be relegated to the bench last weekend. This is a familiar spot for the American, who netted 1.3 goals per 90 in the Eredivisie last term, in which he made just a single league start.
Luuk de Jong (29), Johan Bakayoko (12) and Guus Til (10) all struck double figures in terms of goals in the league last term, with Saibari some way back on four.
De Jong also contributed 15 assists but was outstripped in this capacity by midfielder Joey Veerman, who managed one more.
PSV, meanwhile, picked up on average less than one card per match in the Eredivisie last season on average, meaning that Feyenoord brought the worst out of them in this respect. Curiously, Noa Lang was booked twice against the men from De Kuip – in the Super Cup and KNVB Beker – but did not see a single card in the league, albeit his season was destroyed by hamstring problems.

While PSV have enjoyed a relatively stable summer, the same cannot be said of Feyenoord, who have seen key midfielder Mats Wieffer leave for Brighton and the end of Yankuba Minteh’s productive loan from Newcastle.
Furthermore, they are plagued by numerous injury problems: captain Gernot Trauner, star left back Quilindschy Hartman and striker Julian Carranza are all poised to miss out, while Calvin Stengs (18 G+A in the Eredivisie last season) and Quentin Timber (16 G+A) are not fully fit.
Of course, the key change is the loss of head coach Arne Slot to Liverpool, with Brian Priske stepping into the void. The Dane has pledged to play in an attacking manner, yet his system is different and it would be understandable if it takes some getting used to.
Recent friendly results suggest the transition will not be without problems. Feyenoord have lost their two most recent friendly matches, going down 3-1 to Monaco on Wednesday having lost 5-0 to Benfica previously. In both these matches, they had less of the ball than their opponents and mustered a total of only six shots on target.
Gimenez was not involved in the midweek friendly encounter, which was played out between two heavily rotated teams. He scored 23 goals in the Eredivisie last season and will shoulder even more of the offensive burden following Minteh’s departure.
Clearly, the Rotterdam side are set to be left shorthanded offensively compared to last season, while Wieffer’s departure means they are also deprived of their major destructive midfielder. He made 55 fouls in the Eredivisie last season – 19 more than anyone else on the team. In second was Timber, and his place in the starting XI is in doubt.

Unsurprisingly, given the competitive nature of their rivalry, PSV and Feyenoord have met regularly in recent seasons.
Last term, there were four clashes between the rivals. PSV picked up victories in the first two games, including a 1-0 success in the Super Cup a year ago, but Feyenoord responded by winning the KNVB Beker. The last fixture between the teams, meanwhile, ended in a 2-2 draw at Philips Stadion.
Although PSV enjoyed the stronger results, the only player to score in multiple games between these sides was Santiago Gimenez, with the Feyenoord striker bagging in both league encounters. He is 3.5 to find the net here.
PSV, meanwhile, were prone to picking up cards against Feyenoord. They received at least three in each of the four matches, including in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Shield.
Perhaps the most notable statistic between these clubs was a high corner count in their last three meetings. Each posted more than 11 corners, with two of those games hitting 15. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that last season’s Super Cup saw only five such incidents.
It’s also worth flagging that while both of these clubs were prolific scorers last season, they were also solid at the back. When they met each other, only two of their fixtures produced over 2.5 goals, with each team also claiming a 1-0 victory. Goals are not, therefore, guaranteed.
