Germany have the privilege of opening their campaign at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, the showpiece venue of the tournament and where the final will be held on July 15.
What is the team news?
Defender Jerome Boateng is expected to be fit to start for the Germans after recovering from a groin injury. His Bayern Munich team-mate Manuel Neuer - so crucial to the way coach Joachim Low wants his side to play - should also start in goal after making his comeback from eight months out in the recent 2-1 defeat to Austria.
Mexico have no reported injury problems, which suits head coach Juan Carlos Osorio's penchant for changing his team and tactics to tackle whatever strengths the opposition have.
“I think that we must be a mix of two things,” Osorio says. “We must be a team who play our own strengths but also respect our opponents. Obviously, we must be loyal to our style because that is how we create our chances. I think we are on the right path.”

Germany's preparations were disrupted by a controversy surrounding Mesut Ozil, Ilkay Gundogan and a photo taken with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
On the pitch, Joachim Low's side have won only once in their last six games - a 2-1 win over the very limited Saudi Arabia - but there remains very little signs of panic around the camp, such is the depth of tournament experience their squad boasts.
As for Mexico, they're out to avenge a 4-1 defeat to a second-string German side at the Confederations Cup last year, and improve on a record of just one win in their last 11 against Die Mannschaft. Much will depend on Javier Hernandez - Chicharito to his friends - who spent two successful seasons in German football with Bayer Leverkusen between 2015-17, scoring 39 goals.

What's our prediction?
The Germans have a rock-solid reputation as a Turniermannschaft - a tournament team - for a very good reason. New faces such as Leon Goretzka and Timo Werner are being introduced among the serial winners like Neuer, Toni Kroos and Mats Hummels. It's a decent blend, and should be too much for the Mexicans.
