Jo Inge Berget scored twice as New York City FC began the era of coach Domenec Torrent with a 2-1 victory against Toronto FC on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
NYCFC were struck with an early blow when David Villa, who has eight goals and four assists in 12 games, went off with an injury in the 28th minute.
After Victor Vazquez scored in the 37th minute for Toronto, Berget got the equaliser in the 51st minute before sending the hosts in front 17 minutes later.
NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson denied Tosaint Ricketts and the subsequent rebound by Sebastian Giovinco in the first minute of stoppage time to preserve the win.
